La Maison Rêver has breathtaking views of the Pyrenees and is the perfect retreat to enjoy all that this magnificent region has to offer. The historic property was completely renovated in 2009, has two double bedrooms and a large, open plan ground floor, ideal for friends and families.
It is located south of Foix, which offers all amenities, a bustling market every Friday and an abundance of fantastic, affordable French restaurants. If you're looking for more than fine wine and cuisine, La Maison Rêver is the perfect location for exploring the abundance of Cathar Castles, hiking, fishing, canoeing and cycling.
During the Winter months you can spend your days skiing at Bonascre and unwinding at the thermal spa in Ax-les-Thermes.

Foix, France is a small city with a big personality. Surrounded by mountains and sliced with rivers, this is a true gateway to the Pyrenees. Situated about 30 miles from Toulouse or 40 miles from Andorra, it is also quite central.
The village’s striking medieval castle (“château”) is its most imposing monument, and it can be seen from all directions. Inside, climb the towers for splendid view of the city below and the mountains all around.
Foix is also capital of the picturesque Ariège department, one of France’s least populous areas. A prime allure of the territory is quite simply the vast diversity here and nearby. Either the Atlantic or Mediterranean coasts, while not mere minutes away by any stretch, are within reasonable distance.
Spain and Andorra lie nearby to the south. Major cities and attractions of southwest France are close by. The popular Cathar country, with its splendid castles, are within reach. Adventures, both for summer and winter, are rampant. And the scenery here is nothing short of spectacular.
Foix, France History and Geography
Foix’s unique position—both remote and close to crucial borders—has resulted in this small city seeing unusual power and influence over the years. The city has become embroiled in wars between counts and kings, between Aragon and Castille, Toulouse and Barcelona and even between England and France as well as Spain and France. Its unique location has also resulted in it serving as a refuge, for the Cathars as well as downed World War II pilots fleeing Nazis.
What to do in and around Foix
There is a blue box on the windowsill in our home which contains all of the leaflets and magazines from the Tourist Information office in Foix, however here is a list of some of places we have already visited and highly recommend:
• Foix Castle – for a small fee you can climb to the top of two of the three towers, which offer amazing views across Foix and the Pyrenees. www.ariege.com/chateaudefoix
• Montsegur Castle – a short drive to the East of Foix. You can climb to the top of the infamous Montsegur Castle and have a 360o view of the Ariege region. Perfect for a day out – we recommend sturdy footwear and a picnic. You need to pay a small fee to climb to the top which also gives you access to the museum in Montsegur Village. www.montsegur.org
• Carcassonne Castle – Approx. 1 hour drive North-East of Foix. Follow signs for ‘La Cité’ the breathtaking castle with visitors car park. A truly fantastic day out wandering through the lanes of shops, cafés and restaurants. Entry to La Cité is free, however there is a small fee to enter the ancient inner castle. www.carcassonne.org
• Mirapoix – Approx 30 minutes drive North-East of Foix. A beautiful medieval town, steeped in history. Full of shops and cafes, it is perfect for a long lunch, or an afternoon browsing.
• Ax-les-Thermes – Approx 30 minutes drive South of Foix. A thermal spa town, with public baths, shops, restaurants, casino, as well as a Winter ski resort – Ax is perfect for a relaxed day out. www.ax-ski.com and www.axlesthermes.free.fr
• Toulouse – Approx 1 hour drive North of Foix. The 5th largest City in France, Toulouse offers everything from an amazing central plaza, ancient churches and cathedrals, shops, restaurants, museums, trips on the Canal du Midi, etc….. • Lordat – Approx 30 minutes South-East of Foix are the ruins of the Chateau de Lordat perched high above the Ariége Valley with views out to the St. Bathelemy mountains. It is now home to a bird sanctuary and truly spectacular flying displays.
• St Girons – Situated approx 45 minutes West of Foix, St Girons is a well worth a visit on a Saturday morning for it’s large weekly market. You can buy local produce - fruit, vegetables, breads, cheeses, meats, as well as gifts and artisan products. There are also numerous stalls where you can grab lunch and coffee. This is truly a slice of French life!
Please note that the property is located close to lakeside beaches rather than the seaside

"Lovely holiday but property somewhat neglected"
I too have owned (and loved) a holiday home in France (in the Auvergne) so am well aware of the problems associated with periods of absence in a semi-mountain climate: a couple of hours of airing with shutters open would rapidly restore the status quo. However, La Maison Rever has a serious and very evident damp problem; it is consequently unpleasantly cold (we had temperatures in the 30s outside, below 12 inside) and the interior décor is stained and damaged. The garden was so overgrown and weed-infested as to obscure the views and provide little room for enjoyment: "a well-maintained terrace area" is a mis-description in the extreme. It was almost impossible to wrench open the swollen shed door to access the grubby garden furniture. The instructions provided for the 'heating and hot water' were sadly out-of date: the lower dial was completely defunct on arrival and the thermostat set below the scale. Other than that, the house itself was clean and very well-equipped. I do feel, however, that if you are going to ask rental money in advance, and pay in the requested cheque, for the WHOLE amount, long before the tenancy, you should make more effort to ensure that the property as a whole matches the description provided. This almost certainly means employing a local gardener/overseer in order to avoid infringing the trades description act!! NB. When the door and windows were open, all the local cats leapt in!
Dear Pat, Thank you for your review and feedback which we always treat as important and valuable to us. Our house is not just a business for us as we treat La Maison Rever as our personal second home. You are right that these old properties do need opening up and take a time to both air and warm up. The damp issue is now resolved, and wasn't a major issue but just the walls absorbing moisture which then needing to be warmed up and lived in. I am sorry to hear that you found La Maison Rever cold as we usually receive positive feedback about how cooling the house is when it's been hot and sunny outside. We installed a wood burning stove and always have a ready supply of wood for guests to use, whatever season it is. The weather had been very wet for prolonged periods before your trip, followed by a hot and sunny few weeks which made the garden grow rapidly. Following your feedback ,we have resolved this matter going forward by increasing the amount of gardening hours completed by our house keepers. The guest information/instructions has now been updated and clearly clarified for the use of the boiler and central heating system and I think the issue you had was due to a previous guest damaging the thermostat dial on the boiler. We wish you had contacted us at the beginning of your stay so that we could have resolved this, and your other concerns, immediately. As for the local cats, I am pleased to tell you that most of them have left as we have had a change of neighbours. Our previous guests at La Maison Rever have informed us that their children had befriended the cats, therefore as a result of your feedback we have updated our guest information details to advise all guests that the cats are not to be encouraged to enter our property. "A dream of a stay"
It was what it said on the tin. Impeccably clean, well supplied. Travel directions and key code precise and worked a treat. A simple French home that had all mod cons but hadn't lost its old fashioned charm. We were lucky to enjoy intense Summer heat and the thick walls kept us cool, the garden was a sun-trap for the sun-worshippers, the views were so wonderfully Deep France that you felt lucky to be there. On a light note, the old-fashioned absence of sound proofing between floors, did mean that all sounds were clearly transmitted, fine for family, but could have been tricky if people weren't familiar with each other !
