The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Var region
We are in the Var region of Provence which enjoys sunshine through out the summer months, and located within easy reach of the beautiful coastal resorts of St Tropez , Cannes, Nice, Antibes, Cassis, etc. whilst Monaco is only a short 2 hr drive. It is a short journey to the city of Aix en Provence with its wide boulevards and world class restaurants and individual shops. Or visit the many picturesque villages such as 'Tour' or take a drive to the Verdon cannon which has a rugged landscape with inland lake and beach. Also, situated in the midst of a traditional rose wine making region, many of the local domaines will gladly receive you for an adhoc / or pre-booked degustation. Some of the more popular domaine's within a 5 mile radius being: Gavoty, Peyrassol, Terrebonne (cracking 2006 red) - all Medialle D'Or winners in 2008 and years prior.
Here are some interesting facts about the history of the village:
1) Flassans located on one of the pilgrimage ways to St Jacques de Compostelle 2) From this rich history comes the feudal château of the PONTEVES family, the ruins of which dominate the surrounding countryside, and are currently (slowly) being rebuilt with the help of volunteers, as part of a renovation project. 3) There is some discussion whether Emile Zola lived in the village at some point but it is accepted that his novels "La Fortune des Rougons" (written in 1869) was actually based on the political revolt that occurred throughout Provence in 1851. Flassans (Plassans in the novels) features, as does Brignoles (Faverolles). A key fact being: there did exist a family called "Rougon", of which certain (legitimate) members of the family held the role of Mayor of Flassans between 1790 and 1875. One of which (Paul-Frederic) was mayor between 1873 and 1875, who attended the same school as (in Aix en provence), and knew Zola, which therefore lends credence to the possiblity that Zola was indeed aware of the political turbulence that occurred at that time.
Brignoles area
Brignoles is the nearest large town which hosts a large weekly market, with restaurants, cafe's, and large supermarkets. You can easily relax in the main square with its marble paving & fountain, whiling the time away whilst watching the world go buy. Le Luc is a smaller but equally charming town (equidistant to Flassans), and contains similar facilities and is well worth a visit to the old town centre. Just outside the village is a large adventure park for children offering facilities such as go-carting ,horse riding, adventure woodland, tennis etc. If the private pools be to quiet for the children, then the largest water park on the Cote D'azur is within a 20 minute drive ( www.parc-aquatica.com ). For the golfer, there's plenty of very good courses close by (eg. Golfe de Barbaroux = 5 miles - http://www.barbaroux.com/accueil.asp ) . With the coast a half hour drive away, most water sports including scuba diving & sailing are also distinct possiblities.
Flassans village in itself is a small village steeped in history (Zola resided & wrote here at some point in his life), and retains much of the traditional french atmosphere. It has a food store, butchers, chemist, bakers, florist, hairdressers, post office with ATM , bar and a couple of places to eat (or have pizza delivery).
