Enquire nowThe Limousin / Auvergne / Correze region
This is rural France at its best. The Dordorgne river has excellent canoeing activities and superb for the angler!
The Cantal, famous for its cheese and the wonderful countryside with the Limousin cattle roaming around these many thousands of acres.
The Massif Central mountain range is within easy reach by car and you'll find the scenery en route is breathtaking.
One of the nicest places to visit (and its not far at all) is the ancient town of Salers but dont just stop there, try and find the scenic drive which takes you way down below the town along a wonderful winding road. Salers is not only a beautiful place to visit, it also has its own special liqueur. Be warned, try a small bottle first (you either love it or hate it!)
The Argentat / St.Julien-aux-Bois area
St Julien aux Bois is a sleepy village. It has a communal Tennis court and an area to play the French game Boule. The village is surrounded by forestry and endless places to walk or cycle ( there are several bikes at the house for you to use) If you like cycling there is a fabulous Goats farm about 10 km away. They produce the most fabulous organic Goats cheese. Even if you're not really a fan of Goats cheese, you really must try this. The mixture of Goats cheese with crusty bread and a large glass of red wine from Cahors is just too good!
You will find lots of water in the area. The nearby lakes are safe to swim in but the large lake near St Privat is better for fishing (a fishing license is available at the newsagents shop in St Privat..... dont fish without one!)
The Dordogne river is beautiful and if you want to take just one piece of advise from me, go down to the restaurant in Argentat just next to the bridge. Order a nice cool beer and a pizza, then just remember to thank me!

What a fabulous house! Our stay in La Vieille Auberge was absolutely wonderful. So full of character with comfortable beds and loads of space. The garden has a huge BBQ which we used almost every night. This is such a lovely area in France, nice pleasant locals and a really quaint village. Our canoe trip down the Dordogne was "a laugh a minute!" Our only regret was not taking a picnic as there were lots of places to pull over at the side of the river. The bikes are great too. We cycled through the forest for miles and ended up quenching our thirst at the bar in St Privat before wobbling back (through the forest not on the road!) For a totally relaxing holiday I cannot recommend La Vieille Auberge highly enough. We will definitely return. |

Within easy reach of Limoges Airport, St Julien aux Bois is a quiet and peaceful hamlet in the Correze region which makes an ideal location to experience the French way of life. Closely situated to many picturesque villages and sites of interest. The heart of the Dordogne is within easy reach by car. La Vieille Auberge is a remarkable 19th century stone house with many original features such as oak beams and floors. The kitchen is equipped with Aga style log burning range cooker and quality cooking utensils such as La Creuset. The dining hall comprises a minstrel's gallery with a large dining table which could comfortably seat 12 to 14 people. There is a cosy sitting area with log burner for quiet evenings in. The beds are very comfortable which guarantees a good night's sleep. You are guaranteed a warm welcome from the French speaking neighbours who can give you daily weather forecasts, in French of course. Great if you are trying to learn the language. Great location for walks and bike rides (bicycles provided). The English owner is eager to please and welcomes feedback and suggestions to make your stay even more enjoyable. We have visited France and rented several gites over the years and have stayed in La Vieille Auberge for the last two years in succession. We are likely to be staying there again this year and would not hesitate to recommend this accommodation to our friends and family. Bonne vacance! La Vieille Auberge is simply stunning, not only is it a beautiful spacious house with immense character but it is furnished to the highest spec with quality linen, comfortable beds etc. The village was a joy to stay in, we were made welcome by French neighbours and the location was ideal to access historic towns, medieval villages and breathtaking countryside. We have stayed in many rental accommodations within France but this was by far the best and exceeded all expectations. I cannot recommend La Vieille Auberge highly enough.
