The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Vendee region

Vendée and loire atlantique
Vendée is comfortably nestled between Brittany and Charente Maritime. It has a unique micro-climate, which means you get as much sunshine as in the sunny south but without having to travel as far. 140kms of sandy beaches bask in the heat and there's some excellent surf on offer.

The Vendée offers five 18- hole golf courses, museums of every kind, 380km of cycle paths, prehistoric monuments and wildlife galore. How does one region fit it all in?

If you like the idea of miles of golden sand, sloping into sparkling sea - and let's face it, who wouldn't - then the Vendée is the place for you. It's about the size of Devon or Cumbria, but with much more sunshine and a passion for watersports. The beaches here are truly stunning and will ruin you for any other beaches as you'll forever be comparing them and finding others are 'just not quite up to the Vendée standard'.

Local Food and Drink
The Nantais vineyards on the outskirts of Nantes welcome visitors and you are invited to taste their wines. The nearby old town of Ancenis is something of a local wine centre.

The larder of the Loire is one of the richest in France, with fish from the Atlantic, shellfish from the estuary and freshwater fish from the rivers. Vegetables grow in abundance, and since the locals have a very sweet tooth, tarts and pies using fresh local fruits feature prominently in local dishes.

There are plenty of local cheeses to try, made from goat’s sheep and cow’s milk. Bondaroy au Foin is a soft cow’s milk cheese with a tangy flavour cured in hay, while Chabichou Fermier is a strong cone-shaped goat’s cheese. Cremet is a mild creamy cow’s milk cheese often eaten with jam or fruit as a dessert, while Olivet Bleu is a rich blue cheese wrapped in plane tree leaves.

What to do
The nearest big town is La Roche sur Yon, with restaurants, supermarkets, shops, bars and banks. Maison Blanc is just a 20 minute drive to the Atlantic coast, and close to the seaside towns of Saint-Jean-de-Monts, St Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and Les Sable de L’Onnes. St Gilles is alive with restaurants overlooking the marina, while Les Sable has long sandy beaches, a harbour and wonderful shops and restaurants. The more sophisticated resort of La Rochelle, with its large harbour, beautiful boats, wonderful restaurants and superb shopping is just over an hour’s drive away.

The Vendee Region
Spend a day discovering the natural history of the Vendee Marshes with its traditionally constructed buildings, salt marshes and conservation site which is working to protect breeds of animals and varieties of plants from the past. Or visit the museum dedicated to painter Charles Milcendeau in Le Bois Durand – his former home, which he decorated with unusual and colourful Mozarabic frescos.

Apremont area

Apremont, is a pretty village with a medieval Chateau, a large lake and a sandy beach with picnic areas . You can hire pedalos, flat-bottomed boats and canoes to paddle leisurely around the lake. Once you’ve worked up an appetite you can justify trying out the bar and restaurant which have stunning views over the lake.

There are also local attractions offering horse riding, cycling, quad-biking and go-karts. A velo-rail (like a rail-cycle) will take you through 10kms of countryside over the former railway line near Coax.
There are also many superb walks through open countryside, or along the coast.

St Jean-de-monts.
A beautiful sandy beach, which the locals consider one of the most stunning in France (if not the world). If you can wrench yourself and the family from your favourite spot on the sand, it also has great watersports. Or if you or your children fancy yourselves as the next Jamie Oliver, then hot-foot it to the Saturday morning market a couple of miles away for superb fresh produce.

St Gilles-croix-de-vie
Famed for its fresh sardines. Look for the vintage ones (sardines millésimées) which are supposed to be laid down like fine wine! Even the canned variety are treated with respect. For children with short attention spans there is a tiny museum, the Maison du Pecheur, which used to be a fisherman’s cottage (approx 10 miles).

St Gilles is a major resort town. It features many opportunities for dining out, ranging from fine French cuisine to an English bars offering Sunday roast dinners. Stroll along the quayside of an evening or enjoy any of the local bars and cafes on the promenade that run alongside what can only be described as one of the very best beaches on the west coast of france, currently hosting the worlds largest surfing events as seen on sky sports, one of the best beaches in the area. The Atlantic Toboggan park provides an action packed fun day for all the family with an array of daring water slides. The vendee offers an array of attractions for both adult and non adult for more information please refer to our places of interest within our site.

A special mention must be made of Le Puy du Fou a medieval spectacular and theme parc. The year is 1429 and Le Puy du Fou Castle is the theatre for the recreation of a ferocious battle. Gigantic war machines and spectacular stunts punctuate the bloodthirsty performance. Separated into different areas you also witness an extraordinary display of falconry featuring over 250 birds, a Viking Dragon ship emerging from the water in flames, racing Roman chariots and Gladiatorial battles inside a 115 meters long stadium. Of an evening La Cinescenie features a night time extravaganza with a cast of over 1000 actors on the world's largest stage. For children that thought lord of the rings was spectacular then this is a must, headsets can be worn to translate french to english so you can follow the story lines.

Island life
Escape the mainland for a short time to admire the small island of Noirmoutier. Give your children a taste of the past with the old-fashioned bathing huts or they can relax on the unspoilt beaches (Bois de La Chaize is the prettiest), clamber around the ruins of the 7th century monastery or get wet at the Oceanile waterpark (approx 20 miles).

A little nearer your holiday home, there is a choice of two superb golf courses, including the famous St James’s. This golf course with its hedgerows provides an excellent succession of water features, maritime pine and oaks over more than 2 miles

If you would like to venture further a-field, there are excellent rail links to Paris from La Roche sur Yon.

Peter & Anne. July 07

Hello, Just thought I'd let you know that we returned from our holiday in Apremont. We couldn't recommend the house too much. It had to be the best place we have rented in years, we did have good weather but I'm sure we would have enjoyed it anyway. My husband says he doesn't want to buy a holiday home in Norfolk any more he wants to buy one in the Vendee !!! We'll definitely be returning and if you need any recommendations don't hesitate to contact us.
Yours
Veronica Aug 07

Thanks again for the use of your house, we had a great time in the Vendee. We left it in the condition we found it and there was no casualties and we will be coming back next year.
Jamie Aug 07

Apologies for not getting back to you sooner. We had a wonderful holiday. The house was perfect for us and we all enjoyed the pool. We were very fortunate with the weather also which made it even better. So we're back to earth with a bump!
Thanks again Paul,
Tracy Sept 07

We had a lovely holiday thank you. House was well appointed, like home from home. We had a great time and really enjoyed our stay & may well wish to book again at some point in the future.
Dawn & Chris April 08

Hi Paul the place was great, made a fab holiday.
John May 08

We had a great time thank you. The pictures on the website do not do the villa justice. It far exceeded our expectations. The whole family made full use of the pool and the barbecue and outdoor eating. Well done. You have thought of everything when equipping the villa. I will certainly recommend the villa to friends and family. Thank you so much for providing the perfect holiday home.
Best regards
Mark Sue & family. July 08
