Matjiesvlei Cottages has 3 self catering restored historical cottages, of which Die Bokwagtershuis is one. It is situated in Matjiesvlei at the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains, 16 km from Calitzdorp on route 62. The hustle and bustle of city life melts away - the perfect place to relax and unwind. The town of Calitzdorp is known for its excellent wines and is known as the port capital of South Africa. There are a number of restaurants in town and basic provisions can be bought in Calitzdorp. A number of artists have settles in Calitzdorp and visitors can visit the art studios in and around Calitzdorp. Outdoor activities in Matjiesvlei: Birding: Bring your own binoculars, and have a look at all the wonderful birds nestling in Matjiesvlei. Plants: enjoy photographing beautiful plants while walking, especially aloes, Spekbos and plakkies. Hiking: your choice is between the gravel road in the valley (7 km), the hiking road next to the river (30 min or Steering’s Kloof (1,5h). Cycling: In the valley you can cycle on the valley road and to the R62 and back. This will provide a good hour’s cycling. For the more adventurous, you could continue on the R62 to Calitzdorp. Another option is taking your bicycle to town by car, park your car in town, and go on the Kruisrivier /Groenfontein road. This circle of about 55 km, passing the Rooikoppe, and then a couple of kilometres on the R62 back to Calitzdorp. Parking at Amalienstein, +\- 20 minutes the direction to Ladismith, you could cycle in the Seweweekspoort with all the wonderful rocks round every corner. Fishing: In the Gamka River you will find Karp and Yellow fish and a small amount of Black Bass. As Yellow fish is an endangered species, it should be released to the river unharmed after being caught. Canoeing and Swimming: There is a good stretch of about 1 km you can canoe. The guests of Matjiesvlei Cottages have the use of a private grass covered picnic spot next to the river where they can swim and play. There is a built braai if they would like to have their lunch there. Die Bokwagtershuis, “Goat keeper’s house”, was originally built during the 19th century as accommodation for Matjiesvlei’s goat keeper. His task was to tend to all the goats of the different farmers in the valley. The house has been authentically restored to maintain its atmosphere, with addition of modern amenities. Description: Story Behind the Name Mountain Camp is a name on which my wife, our two daughters and I all just simply agreed. The special nature of Mountain Camp is not that it is named after anything of special significance. Instead, what it represents to us is a dream that is slowly being fulfilled each year as more and more guests, family and friends discover, share and enjoy our home and property. We spent over 20 years visiting parents in Blowing Rock while our daughters were growing up. When we decided to look for a home or home site, we listed criteria important to each family member including: a close proximity to Blowing Rock; reasonably easy access; a view; enough woods for trails; and a creek of some sort. We were not sure whether we could find one piece of property with all those things and stay within our budget. We chose the Mountain Camp property because it appeared to have everything for which we were looking even including a very small stream. However, we could not tell if it was going to have a view. After the road was built and the building site cleared, we were thrilled to discover a beautiful view! The home design and building process was also a very enjoyable collective decision making endeavor for our family, and it consequently reflects parts of each of us. It has been several years now since the first Christmas that we spent at Mountain Camp in 2007, and our plans and vision for the property continue to grow. Description: The firstfruits of a winemaker’s best grapes. The first juice to flow from a new batch of the finest champagne. Pronounced “coo-VAHY”, Cuvée is a French term referring to a sommelier’s best effort. Now, Cuvée has also come to mean that the best efforts to date of a lifelong builder can be experienced in this stunning Timberframe mountain escape. Walk from the paved parking area, up the native stone pathway, and through the solid wood door to enter the home. The living area features a two-story ceiling with an exposed beam tongue & groove cathedral ceiling, furnished with cozy leather furnishings arranged around a stacked stone vented, remote-controlled gas log fireplace and an HDTV. Decorating the great room are mementos of trips to Mexico and Eastern Europe, as well as taxidermied local animals including a bobcat, elk, and deer. On the other side of the main room is the kitchen and dining area. The gourmet-caliber kitchen is equipped with every item you would need to prepare a holiday feast for the entire group all the way to a quick snack for a few. There is a prep counter on one side with a wooden top and a porcelain sink, as well as another smaller granite-topped counter with a hand-pounded copper sink. The long main counter has a third sink, also hand-pounded copper made by Native Americans in Arizona, and over this sink hang a trio of beautiful natural agate stone pendant lights. The appliances are all stainless steel and include a 5-burner gas stove with pot filler, convection oven and microwave, and warming drawer. Enjoy your feast on the expansive solid wood dining table, which can expand to seat up to 12. Beyond the dining room is a screened-in sun room. An ideal spot to take a nap or read a book in the fresh air but out of the sun, this room has cushioned lounges and chairs, as well as vinyl windows with adjustable track screens, plus a 175lb blue marlin caught by the owner herself. Also off the kitchen is a laundry room with a pair of HE machines. Upstairs is a game loft, trimmed with custom wrought iron rails, with an 8' pool table. The entire southern wing of the main level is devoted to the master suite. Decoration for this room was inspired by the fiery colors of the autumn leaves in October, as seen through the French doors to the deck. There is a King feather bed and a TV. The private, spa-like bathroom has wonderful features including a custom mirrors & light fixtures, a two-person Italian tiled shower with rainhead and normal hosed head, twin granite vanities with porcelain vessel-style basins, a water closet, and a walkin clothes closet with built in storage. Upon descending the stairs, the first sight greeting you is the wonderful wet bar. Custom made to look just like an Olde English Pub and decorated with antique decanters and steins, the mixologists in your group are sure to enjoy creating cocktails for all the adults. Overhead is a beautiful Tiffany-style fixture with pine cones, reflecting the mountains all around you. Enjoy a fun game on the Wii system, connected to one TV, and use the other TV to enjoy your favorite shows. There is a half bath accessed from this room as well. There are three bedrooms and a bonus room on this level. One Queen bedroom and one King bedroom share a bath between them, Jack-and-Jill style, and each bedroom has its own TV. The third bedroom has a pair of twin beds pushed together to make a King, with a foam topper on so you won't feel the seam, or you can separate them into two twin beds. This room is connected to a full bath. The bonus room at the end of the hall has two sets of built in bunk beds, and each bed has its own electrical outlet so kids can keep their electronics charged at all times. The lower level deck is dominated by the huge hot tub. The tub is the perfect place to melt away your cares and is large enough for 6-7 people at once. Enjoy the stunning year-round mountain views rolling away into the distance, and also watch the ruby throated hummingbirds dance around the feeder. The large upper level deck also overlooks the mountain vistas. The view includes highlights such as Grandfather and Grandmother Mountains, Hawksbill Peak, Saddleback, Wiseman's View, Table Rock, and occasionally Mt. Mitchell. On an especially clear day you can see the skyline of Charlotte in the far distance. At night, after the blazing sunset, you can see the night lights of Lenoir and Morganton twinkling away. The deck is furnished with wrought iron furniture including an alfresco set of table & chairs, and is partially covered. The stunning front yard was custom designed by a local landscape architect. Perennial flowers bloom throughout the season, and at various times of day you may spot local wildlife including foxes, rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, deer, and more. To your right is a den, perfect for those who need to work while away from the office. A few steps further, the space opens into an expansive great room dominated by a see-through, double-sided stacked stone gas log fireplace. Description: Come enjoy this beautiful mountain cabin! Nestled at the end of a quiet street with year-round views, you've found the perfect hideaway! The main level great room is dominated by a wall of windows overlooking the hillside across the valley. Leather furnishings are arranged around a floor-to-ceiling stone gas fireplace, with a large HDTV mounted above it. On one side of the living area is a full length pool table, and on the other side is a long picnic-style dining table. The upgraded kitchen features granite counters, stainless steel appliances, and is trimmed with bark siding. There is also a half bath by the kitchen, and the washer & dryer is tucked in a closet off the bath. The master suite on this level has a King bed, TV, doors to the deck with the best view in the house, and a private bath with double travertine vanities and a tiled shower. The house is very friendly for small children, with an assortment of toddler-appropriate toys, baby-proof cabinet locks, and even a car-shaped toddler bed upstairs for the littlest guests. The toddler bed is in the corner of the loft, near the ping pong table. Also upstairs is a bedroom with two Queen beds, as well as a full bathroom with double marble vanities and a tub/shower. The bathroom opens into the bedroom as well as to the loft. Several sets of glass French doors open from the great room out to the deck where you can relax in the Adirondack chairs or on the picnic table by the charcoal grill and enjoy the views. In autumn, the hillside facing the cabin will be ablaze with brilliant color, and in spring, enjoy the rhododendron and mountain laurel blossoms. The hot tub awaits on a pad just steps from the deck.
