About Yachats

The name Yachats comes from the Native American Indian tribe who inhabited the area more than 1,000 years ago. Though diseases brought over by European settlers eventually got the better of them.

Coos and Lower Umpqua Indians were forcibly resettled in the Yachats area in the 1860s by the U.S. army. Their descendents are still there today and you can visit the reservation while you're there.

Yachats was once known for its logging industry, but now it's known for being a tourist hotspot. However, you can still spot elements of the logging days—the first hotel in the area was originally a chittum barque warehouse, and there are still a few lumberjacks around.

As Yachats is on the coast, fish and seafood feature prominently on menus throughout the town. Try the freshly caught salmon, albacore, halibut and crab. There's nothing quite like it!

What to do in Yachats

Walk the Yachats 804 trail, starting at Smelt Sands and ending at Starr Creek. It’s just 1.7 miles but is a great afternoon out. It goes along the western edge of town, and connects the seven-mile stretch of beach to Yachats Ocean Road State Park. You'll see some stunning scenery along the way, so don’t forget take your camera or charge your phone!

Go to the festivals that are held in Yachats. There are music festivals and mushroom festivals, so find out what's on when you are there.

Visit Yachats State Park, Devil's Churn (an inlet carved by crashing waves) and Cape Perpetua. It's a trip you'll never forget.

Go fishing, clamming, crabbing, sand dune climbing, hiking, horse riding, cycling and hunting. Drive the 10 miles from Yachats to the covered bridge on the Yachats river, to see a small piece of history.

Visit quirky Whale Park, and see the intermittent mist shooting into the air, looking similar to a spouting whale. The park is in a sculpture of a whale, with a set of flukes on the south end and a nozzle in the ground that is like a whale's blowhole.

Top travel tips for Yachats

You can get to Yachats by flying in to Portland international airport (PDX), or fly into Eugene airport which is nearer. There's a shuttle service or you can hire a cab.

If you are thinking of doing a road trip along the 345-mile Oregon coast, you could, theoretically do it in around 8 hours. However, you should allow at least three days and two nights so you can see the sights—especially Yachats.

It usually rains December through June, but July through September is usually dry and sunny—ideal for days on the beach. Fall is also a good time to go, although dry weather can't be guaranteed.

If you want to get away from it all, go to Yachats. Marvel at the wonders of nature and spend leisurely days beach combing or hike the beautiful trails along the Oregon coast.
