“Wonderful!” The only disappointment we had was not being able to walk along the beach, this was due to ongoing work being done after hurricane Sandy. It looked beautiful sand... The accommodation was warm and very spacious with everything you needed, even down to toilet rolls. There were plenty of cups, plates etc and lots of towels. Marina, the owner, couldn't do enough for us, she gave detailed instructions on where to catch the bus, where to eat and where to buy food. We all had a brilliant time visiting New York...which helped in the knowledge that we were coming back to lovely, clean accommodation every day. Thanks Marina...

“Great stay” Marina, thanks a lot for a wonderful stay. My students (21) and the teachers were delighted with the stay. Marina waited for us patiently all night long as the plane was 7 hours delayed and arranged a pick-up from the airport The apartments were equipped with everything we needed including sugar, spices, alu foil for packaging and plenty of dishes in the kitchen. Marina is a wonderful person, ready to help you and solve any complaints ( if you really have any) on spot. A free phone is a real help, especially to those who come from abroad. Although we stayed in New York only for 10 days we will never forget that excellent adventure. My only complaint is that I did not have enough time to talk to the host as we were busy all dy long. Marina- I promise I will return sooner than you think. Leszek

Staten Island holidays

Often an afterthought while visiting New York City, Staten Island has some delights of its own and is a good base for exploring the “Big Apple”. For all your accommodation needs in New York’s fifth borough, visit Holiday Lettings where you will find a Staten Island holiday rental to suit all your requirements.

About Staten Island

Just separate from New Jersey and New York, Staten Island is the smallest of New York’s five boroughs in terms of population.

But what it lacks in population it makes up for in land mass: it's the 3rd largest borough.

The island was first mentioned by Italian explorer Giovanni de Verrazano in 1520 who sailed through The Narrows under Frances' flag. In 1609, Henry Hudson arrived while sailing for the Dutch who named it Staten Eylandt (literally "States Island") after their parliament the Staten-General.

Following the end of the second Anglo-Dutch War in 1667, Holland’s foothold in the New World was ceded to the English by the treaty of Breda with Staten Island now part of the English colony of New York.

You can find out all about the history on the island itself, and it's definightly worth visiting a museum or two!

What to do

While it’s possible to get to the suburb of Staten Island by driving over the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, the Staten Island Ferry has been making the 25-minute free journey into the city since 1906. That's the best way to see New York - it has the best views and passes the Statue of Liberty and Governor's Island.

While Staten Island has plenty to see and do in its many parks and historic towns of Richmond and Snug Harbor, the island is better used as a jumping off point for New York City.

Arriving at the Manhattan Ferry terminal, you’re only a few blocks from both Wall Street, where you can see the New York Stock Exchange in action, and Battery Park where boats depart for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Top Staten Island travel tips

Make sure you have good walking shoes as Manhattan is best explored on foot. You will see so many sights that you recognise from the cinema and television, it will be hard to decide where to stop.

Get a feel for the city by taking the hop-on-hop-off bus to navigate around the city getting off at all the spots that interest you.

Shopping, of course, is amazing on 5th Avenue where you’ll find the Rockefeller Centre for ice skating and Tiffany’s for that Audrey Hepburn photo opportunity. If you are hungry grab a hotdog from a street vender! Delicious!

Visiting NYC doesn’t come cheap, but by staying on Staten Island your money not only goes further, but allows you to eat in a non-touristy restaurant like a native New Yorker. To find the perfect Staten Island holiday rental visit Holiday Lettings, where you’ll find dozens to choose from.

BEAUTIFUL 4BR/4BA Home, Staten Island, NY City Borough.
Fantastic house in Staten Island

We had an amazing time at the house. It is beautifully laid out and in a very quiet area. There are plenty of local amenities and great transport links to NYC. Maria was very helpful through the entire process and I would definitely recommend this property to anyone. … see more
Historic Gem in Staten Island
August 2018

The house was in a great location very spacious and clean. There was 8 people in our party for one week. There was no washing machine or dryer but there is a laundrette around the corner. There was 3 bowls, 3 glasses, 3 cups enough plates and not enough cutlery. There wasn’t enough dish towels and dish cloths. So we had to buy cups, cutlery and dish cloths whilst there. Parking was great but don’t park facing the wrong way of the street as we got a parking ticket at 4am. The recycling and bin situation wasn’t clear and I’m surprised they didn’t recycle bottles and plastics in New York. Would of been good to have this info in the info folder. Great views of Manhattan from the house and lovely outside space.see more
