“Scratch ultimate island sunset view off the bucket list!” I've watched sunsets in Hawaii, Jamaica, Turks & Caicos, Bahamas, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and California, and none of them match the view we had from the spacious patio at Blue agave this past October week. Even better, we watched from the upper-deck pool, with a completely unencumbered view of the bays of St. John's below. I can't imagine a better island vacation base. The half-dozen beaches we visited were small, intimate, uncrowded and nothing but clean white sand, thanks to the national-park influence. The park guides offer great hiking tours -- don't miss the Reef Bay Trail, which includes historic sugar mill ruins, petroglyphs and return by boat. I was pleasantly surprised by the great night-life options for food and cocktails. Woody's, the Beach Bar, Skinny Legs are great spots to get started, and we had great meals at Margaritas, Rhumba (awesome pad thai) and Spyglass. Two nights we grilled mahi mahi on the Blue agave deck -- the perfect place to relax. Our group filled three of the four bedrooms. When we weren't at the beach, we spent all of our time on the travertine-covered patio with lots of room and lounges to spread out, watch for iguanas in the trees, talk and party. The rooms are all updated with flat screens and wireless. Very private. Best of all, the owners are meticulous about keeping the rooms clean and the property tidy. Bottomline: This is the best beach vacation I've enjoyed.

“Perfect place to get away from it all:)” Ive been to St.John many times and was lucky enough to have found this little piece of Paradise. The Coral Bay eco retreat is the perfect place to stay when you long to get away from it all and connect with nature again. The views are breathtaking with the most amazing sunrises and sunsets. Lots of space to sit outside for a cook out and a romantic meal on the patio deck! So all you need to bring is food and your beverages of choice everything else was provided; and with plenty of. Great hiking trails and the beach nearby although; I would recommend a jeep rental so you can get out and experience the rest if the Island. I cant wait to return!

“Great spot for Groups” We stayed with a group of 10 adults and really enjoyed the arrangements. The master bathroom is outrageous in size and amenities. The other bedrooms in the main house share a bath, which would probably not be a problem for teens, but would not be the best arrangement if you had all 6 rooms filled with couples. The trip down to the house is a little tricky, but there are many other villas with much more treacherous drives. We have made many visits to SJ, always renting villas and this one was very well received. We enjoy the Coral Bay area over the Cruz Bay spots, but this location makes both accessible, although both are a bit of a drive. the N. Shore beaches are pretty close, especially the less populated beaches like Francis Bay. The kitchen could have used some more equipment, we were constantly running out of glasses and there was a somewhat odd assortmnent of plates, pitchers etc. The ceramic stove top looks nifty, but is not useful - very hard to get the heat right and then a mess after the smallest of spills. The views are terrific and the pool deck got a lot of use. It looks like a iPod player has been added; that was sorely missed when we stayed and the video equipment was not operational, but we really didn't need it and did not mention this until checkout (as it really wasn't a problem). The management was great, with checkin and checkout very smooth - since our group consisted of veteran SJ travellers, we really didn't need much. The wireless router is housed in a room off the main house and its reach was a bit short - you needed to be sitting inside to get internet when it would have been nice to be able to sit at the pool deck and enjoy the sun and the views while trying to stay a little connected to the mainland. All in all, a place to recommend and a management experience that is sure to please.

“Paradise found.” I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about all the 5 star reviews. Possible? I was planning a last minute vacation, and we were torn between booking a resort or a villa. Though Mooncottage was booked, the photos compelled us to reach out to Brian anyway. As luck would have it, the existing reservation canceled just prior to our booking elsewhere. We've rented many lovely vacation homes, and none have so perfectly suited their place and purpose. Renting vacation property on-line can be tricky. Either the photography over promises, or the house under delivers. In this case, I don't know that one hundred photos could actually convey how picture-perfect this house and location really are. The house feels very remote. The rough dirt road makes you feel like your are going someplace very exotic. This house offers a unique indoor/outdoor experience that make each equally enjoyable. We drove all over the island, and couldn't find a better view, much less one you could enjoy in complete seclusion. At night, the lighting transforms the house and gardens to a dramatic, resort-like setting. Instead of the property going dead-dark after sunset, it is illuminated in a way creates beautiful garden vignettes that can be enjoyed indoors or out. The walls of the living area are almost 50% open (screened) so you don't have to turn your head very far to catch a view - day or night. I had reservations about mosquitos, and not having aC or cable, which proved to be unfounded. We were as happy to return home as we were to go to the beach. Though on the remote end of the island, it's a short drive to the beaches, and the small grocery store at the bottom of the hill has most things. If your an avid snorkeler, you might bring your own or rent. The gear at the house is fine, but the fins are fairly small. There were plenty of towels, 2 beach chairs, coolers and a beach bag to haul your stuff. I would gladly skip the room-service if I had the opportunity to stay at Mooncottage again!

“Vacation Paradise” White Sea Gull was amazing! The views were spectacular! Jacqueline was amazing, she attended to everything we could possibly need, the room was more beautiful than expected! Quiet, clean, lovely breezes, beautiful view any time of day! What a way to wake up! We couldn't have enjoyed this stay any more, just not enough good things to say about the rental or the owner!!! Such a romantic, relaxing place for two! Lots of personal touches from the owner, antiques throughout. We have been to St. John several times before, and this is by far the most charming, comfortable setting we have found! The furniture is beautiful, and Jacqueline has thought of every little thing! Beach chairs, cooler,& towels provided, just show up and enjoy!! Better than any picture, all that is advertised and more! We loved it! So much so, that I cried when I had to say goodbye and give the key back. Can't wait to see you again Jacqueline!

“Beautiful Villa in Paradise” My wife and I have stayed in this villa for three years in a row (so far). The place is beautiful, high up on a ridge overlooking Fish Bay. The view is amazing. It's private, yet within 10 minutes of Cruz Bay. Michael is a great host and will go out of his way to provide any guidance you seek while on St John. This is a perfect spot for a couple and the pictures can't do it justice!

“The best slice of paradise shared with friends!” What a great setting for three couples. Plenty of private space and great common areas. The kitchen fits everyone comfortably to cook and make beach lunches! The dinning area terrific for group dinners and later on games ( plenty in the closet). The location was incredible - a short drive to any of three paradise-pristine-quiet beaches, the local shops area and local restaurants. Best of all, the view from the balcony. Perfect place to gather for sunrise (just in case island sounds awaken you - the bray of mules and roosters - imagine waking up laughing), sunrise is not to be missed! late afternnon relax time after hectic (snorkeling/ more sun-screen/swim again) days at the beach, and night-times when you can see millons of stars sparkling in the dark night sky. Happy Our is like home.. just in paradise! Totally comfortable, easy to manage, and fun to be in with all the great island-fish decor!

“Excelent place to relax and take in St. John” We had an excellent stay at Pui Pu. The house is a nice short distance outside of Cruz Bay to keep things calm and quiet but not too far to drive into town for the nightlife and shopping. The best part of the house is the openness of the house. Open up the 3 sets of French doors and you get are beautiful view of chocolate hole and a cool morning breeze. Being on the southern side of the island you get a pretty steady breeze to keep things cool for the morning/evening. Don’t kid yourself, during the day there is nowhere that’s cool, unless you are either in the pool or in the ocean. You could hide away in one of the 2 A/C bedrooms, but then there is no point in going to the USVI. We really enjoyed our stay with a great group of friends and look forward to going back in the near future.

“Amazing from Sunrise to Sunset” Renting this villa for a week is a 'check' in the bucket list. To wake up every morning to an amazing sunrise over the Caribbean waters to ending the day looking up at your own personal planetarium, it's something you should do if you have the opportunity. If you are seeking relaxation, privacy, and a nice home - this is great choice. The home is in a great location in St John - 10 minutes to Cruz Bay and a short drive to the North Shore and Coral Bay.

“Beautiful views of Sunset Ridge & St Johns” Beautifil view of Cruz Bay. It was nice to use the pool for me in the morning before adventuring out to the next beach or activity. The villa has lots of space for the two of us and we didn't even need the second room. The kitchen had all of the gadgets needed for cooking along with the grill that we used several times for seafood dinners. They provided us with a cooler and chairs for the beach snorkeling gear for 1 which was great. We got to see lots of creatures on our adventures and in the water. We recommend the trip on the "Bad Kitty" to the British Virgin Islands and "The Baths". We had a blast and will definitely be back.

St. John holidays

About: Saint John

In the US Virgin Islands, you’ll find tiny, beautiful, and tropical Saint John. With a lush national park surrounded by white sand beaches on all coasts, endless watersports, friendly locals, a burgeoning culinary scene, shopping galore, and plenty of places to get your buzz on while relaxing – Saint John should top your list of places to visit in the coming years. Here’s a breakdown of everything you’ll need to know before you go:

History

A brief history of the island starts with sugar cane planation agriculture and the slave revolt in 1733 that left a quarter of the island’s population dead. The US bought it from Denmark in 1917, and John Rockefeller owned much of it by 1956. He donated it back to the US and it was declared a National Park, which is why most of the centre of the island remains untouched and well preserved. Since then, tourism has exploded on this beautiful escape in the middle of a turquoise ocean.

Things to do

If you’re coming to Saint John and the Caribbean in general – your fun begins at the beaches. Hawksnest Beach has incredible scuba diving and snorkelling where you can see many species of fish. Trunk Bay is extremely popular, which is a good thing and bad thing. It is the most crowded area on the island, but perfect for people watching and sun bathing. Snorkel outside Water Lemon Cay where you’ll be closer to ocean life than anywhere else. Salmon Bay is a short hike away through the National Forest, and is worth the extra effort. Salt Pond Bay and Drunk Bay are two other must-visit beaches, and on Drunk Bay you’ll find eery effigies of ‘human’ families made out of rocks, coral, and sticks left by tourists. Get to Cinnamon Bay early to ensure you’ll have access to a Jet Ski or scuba set.

Try out Maho Beach as well, a family-friendly environment with plenty to do. You’ll find boat charters all over the island for sunset cruises, deep-sea fishing, and much more adventure.

The most well known hike on the island is arguably along the Reef Bay Trail, a 4.9-mile route from Centerline Roadto the beach below. The hike travels along the ruins of the Reef Bay Sugar Factory. A slightly easier hike takes you along the rocky trail on the Coral Bay side of the island. The trail brings hikers to the petroglyph pool, which features unique carvings most likely created by the Taino people, pre-Columbian islanders. The Ram Head Trail is a mountain hike that will leave you breathless, not just at the views either.

If you’re feeling wild, parasail or paraglide at one of the beaches or bays, or if you’re looking to live a bit of history, visit the Annaberg Sugar Plantation.

Transit

Even though Saint John is two-thirds national forest, that doesn’t mean it’s difficult to get around. Board a helicopter, water taxi, small charter plane or commercial aeroplane to jet from island to island, and there’s no passport required for U.S. citizens.

Car rentals are plentiful but remember two key things: you MUST drive on the left side of the road, and speed limits are 20mph at most. There are taxis available through three main companies – Paradise Taxi, Saint John Taxi Association, or Per Dohm’s. If you want to travel in style, book a limo through Executive One Limousines, Slimo’s, or love City Limousines. There are also water taxis available for you.

Vitran operates air-conditioned buses over the length of the island. Buses leave Cruz Bay in front of the ferry terminal at 6am and 7am, then every hour at 25 minutes after the hour until 7:25pm. They arrive at Coral Bay about 40 minutes later.

From Saint John, it's easy to explore the rest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, as ferries and boats are constantly shuttling passengers back and forth. Ferries travel to Red Hook, Charlotte Amalie, and more leaving a few times per hour. Tickets are cheap at $5 for adults and $1 for children. If you've brought your passport along, you can also head to the nearby British Virgin Islands to enjoy an exclusive high-end holiday adventure.

Weather

Looking for perpetual summer? You’ll find it on any of the US Virgin Islands, and Saint John is no exception. The smallest and most protected island of them all experiences sunny days, infrequent showers, and gentle breezes every month of the year. Average weather during the summer season is 82 degrees Fahrenheit (though low 90s is typical too), with the winter dropping down to only 77 degrees. The gentle winds keep the weather from getting too hot or humid, and it remains just perfect, all year.

Rain showers are often short and typically occur early in the morning or at night. All day downpours over numerous days are not common. The driest months are typically February and March, and the wettest is November.

You may need to wear a jacket if you come during the winter, just a light one, for the early morning and late at night. Most of the time shops and restaurants will have AC on to combat the heat. The ocean temp is about 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, so swimmers can cool off but it is not going to stop anyone from jumping in!

Keep an eye on hurricane reports before you book your trip, but they are extremely rare and even if a storm event is happening in ‘the Caribbean’ it may not be anywhere close to Saint John.
