Santander holidays

Santander, one of the largest cities in the region of Cantabria, is considered one of Spain’s most elegant resorts. Facing the beautiful waters of the Bay of Biscay, it’s a perfect destination for a getaway spent in your very own villa or apartment rental. Find somewhere perfect on Holiday Lettings!

Introducing Santander

Traditionally a destination favoured by the well-to-do (and even royalty), Santander has a wealth of attractions both inside and outside of the city itself. It suffered a devastating fire in 1941 which destroyed most of its older buildings, including much of the magnificent Gothic cathedral. Painstaking work has restored it to its former glory and it’s now one of the most stunning sights in Santander.

But the city’s impressive architecture doesn’t end there: the Magdalena Palace, a former royal residence, stands on the peninsula of the same name at the entrance to Santander’s bay. This is a wonderful spot to view the city against the backdrop of blue sea and sky. Venture a little further and you’ll discover the spectacular Cabo Mayor lighthouse.

Outside the city, there are several important Natural Parks to explore, including the wonderful coastal landscape of the Parque Natural Dunas de Liencres and the rocky peaks of the Parque Natural Macizo de Pena Cabarga.

Things to do

Little ones and grownups alike will love spending the day at the Cabarceno Park. Located just a short distance outside the city, it’s home to 150 different species and has 7.5 square kilometres of space for them to roam freely, making it Europe’s largest animal park. The resident elephants, gorillas and rhinos bring a bit of Africa’s wild side to Spain.

If spending days by the sea is more to your taste, the most famous beach in Santander is El Sardinero. This 1.3 kilometre stretch of fine sand is divided in two by the beautiful Jardines de Piquio. Opened in 1925, these gardens and are a tranquil place to take in the stunning views of turquoise sea and golden beach.

For shopping, the pedestrian-friendly streets of Calle Burgos are ideal, while the boutiques of the Avenida de Calvo Sotelo specialise in upmarket merchandise. And after a day spent shopping, sightseeing or sunbathing, why not try some squid (a Cantabrian delicacy) in one of the many seafood restaurants? One thing’s for sure: Santander’s vibrant nightlife scene doesn’t disappoint, with animated bars and lively squares to discover.
