Catemaco is located on Lake Catemaco, the 2nd largest lake in Mexico and just 20 minutes from the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. Sitting at 1000 feet in elevation, the nights are typically cool (in the 70´s) 10 months of the year. Our family owned, gated resort type property is located in a quiet neighborhood and within less than a block a nice little grocery store. Fruits and vegetables are available from a number of little stands just a few minutes walk rom your casita. There are 2 large stores, similar to Wal-Mart, about a 5 minute drive away..great places to stock up on grocerys and other products. Lake Catemaco is only a 10 minute walk away and centro (downtown) about a 20 minute walk following the sidewalk along the lake and passing a number of small parks. Of course you can always take a taxi, about 20 pesos, to anywhere in town or catch a bus at the corner to almost anywhere in the area. Our property is staffed 24 hours a day and my husband and I are here every day to answer any questions.
Some of the attractions in the area include beaches of the Gulf of Mexico, waterfalls, jungle, coffee and tobacco plantations, fishing, boating and some of the most beautiful scenery in Mexico.
Tour the lake by powered launch and at Monkey Island you'll pass within yards of the Mandrill baboons and Howler and Spider monkeys.
Thirty minutes away on the ocean's edge, you'll visit pristine beaches, with scuba, snorkel, kayaking and fishing. We're in the middle of the Las Tuxlas area of Veracruz. Waiting for you are extinct volcanoes, wild rivers, huge waterfalls, and hidden lakes.
Being still in the 'undiscovered' area the true Mexican culture very much an everyday thing. Undiscovered, that is, except by many Europeans, Nationals and Hollywood, where 'Medicine Man' and 'Apocalypto' were filmed (check out the waterfall and jungle scenes). National Geographic crews have been in the area documenting butterflies that are unique to the area and universities from all over the world have explored the ancient Olmec culture native to the area.
