Welcome to the comfort of our home, newly renovated with love and care! Our house has two bedrooms and many amenities. Situated in a leafy private villa with 24-hour security in the historic neighborhood of Santa Teresa, Casa Manga is strategically located between the main sights, nightlife, and beaches of Rio. Experience safety and tranquility amidst tropical nature just minutes from all that the city has to offer.
The 106 m2 (1,140 ft2) house has a large living / dining room, modern kitchen, two bedrooms (one suite), balcony, spacious terrace, and laundry facilities. It is perfect for your stay in Rio—whether on family vacation, your writing retreat, business assignment, or events like Carnival. Experience the city beyond the beach scene without giving up either the comforts of home or easy access to Rio's downtown, nightlife, tourist attractions, and famous coastline.
Infrastructure and facilities: The private location offers our guests quiet days and nights. The master suite includes a queen-sized bed and private bathroom, along with ample closet space. A second bedroom sleeps up to three on a sturdy bunk bed (plus extra mattress). The bedrooms look onto the mango trees that give our house its name—and through which visitors can spy two of Rio's picture postcards: Maracanã stadium and Guanabara Bay. Ceiling fans and air conditioners throughout the house tings cool and comfortable.
The open kitchen, equipped with new appliances and granite dining counter, opens onto a varanda where you can take your morning coffee enjoying the trees, tranquility, and the company of monkeys and toucans attracted by fruit.
In the living room, where a large window opens to hoses, an expandable dining table is perfect for card games or a sit-down meal for up to six people. There's a flat screen television, zone-free DVD player, and wifi. A plush sofa-bed can accommodate up to two more guests.
On top of all this, there's a rooftop terrace that invites lounging, along with a delightful outdoor shower to cool off, or for a post-beach rinse.
Along the path above Casa Manga you'll come across charming homes, a picnic green that brings residents out for morning yoga, expansive views of Guanabara Bay and, in the distance, the Serra dos Orgãos mountains.
Access: You'll arrive at Casa Manga by taxi, bus (stops in front), or the famous Santa Teresa streetcar (“bonde,” currently under renovation). Past the Villa gate on the neighborhood's main street, you'll discover a charming hidden village of 50 houses built along a wooded interior lane. A chauffeured trolley—unique in all of Rio—operates 24 hours a day, carrying residents to their front steps.
With Affordable Rates, your Rio villa is closer than you think!
Santa Teresa: Casa Manga is located in Rio's historic Santa Teresa, a vibrant neighborhood of artists, museums, cafés, restaurants, and bars. Once a sleepy colonial suburb, hilly Santa Teresa long ago became Rio's principal bohemian district, and today is home to a mix of artists, professionals, and middle and working class people. Sitting high above the city, Santa Teresa runs a few degrees cooler than the rest of Rio. Food is available at a market 5 minutes away by bus, and a weekly produce bus offers fresh eggs, fruits, and vegetables just around the corner. Nearby Largo do Guimarães (ten minutes by bus or streetcar) has eateries, bars, weekend night life, artisan shops, and a cinema. On weekend evenings, Largo das Neves fills with families enjoying street food and, often, live music. From the five-star Hotel Santa Teresa to local favorite Bar de Marcó, Santa Teresa is among the most diverse neighborhoods in Rio. It's also very centrally located, allowing you to drop down into various parts of the city. From the Villa's front gate, buses, streetcars, and taxis can take you downtown or to Lapa's nightlife in twenty minutes. It's about a half-hour drive downhill to Ipanema Beach or uphill to Corcovado mountain with its famous Christ the Redeemer statue. Maracanã soccer stadium is about twenty minutes away by taxi. (Travel times can be considerably longer at peak traffic hours.)
Distances: From our village gate, it takes about:
• 20 minutes to the city center;
• 30 minutes to Ipanema beach or climb to the Christ the Redeemer;
• 20 minutes to the Maracanã (or a little more than that in rush hours).
A Personal Note: This was our family home at the time of my birth. The story goes that my father went off by himself to investigate houses for sale, returning to announce to my mother that he'd bought this one on sight, fearful of losing it to one of the prospective buyers on line behind him. My mother was upset at this unilateral decision—until she saw the house, becoming instantly enchanted with it and the surrounding villa. We now live in the U.S., but I could not bring myself to part with this family treasure. I recently restored and updated the house for our family vacations. A pair of journalists covering the Olympics planned to stay a couple of months and stayed over a year. The house will be available against starting in May of 2017. I'm pleased to be able to share our unique villa with you.
