REPLENISH YOUR SOUL IN OUR PIECE OF PARADISE

Santa Maria/Machangulo Peninsula

The Machangulo/Santa Maria peninsula is close to Mozambique’s capital however it remains, a remote rural area. Access to the city is difficult due to the unpredictable weather of Maputo Bay and the Ponte Torres channel between Machangulo and Inhaca Island can be perilous for the small local sailing boats called Dhows.

Santa Maria is the main village. You will see dhows unloading supplies from Maputo at the jetty.

Small shops are dotted around. The most useful being Philemon’s and Orlando’s that sells biscuits, sweets and drinks and other dry goods. There is a bakery that makes fresh bread (Pao as it’s called in Portuguese), a market selling tomatoes and onions.

A new hairdressing salon has just opened.

The Santa Maria Machangulo peninsula has a rich variety of wildlife habitats: rare coastal forest, wetland, some small area of savannah grassland as well as the mangroves.

During your stay you can see hundreds of creatures from the little hermit crabs scuttling along the waters edge to dolphins surfing the waves.

There has been much investment in educating the local population. 2 clinics have been built in the area as well as 2 schools.

There is a significant Wildlife project, which entails a Turtle monitoring program aimed at protecting the nests of up to 200 leatherback and agree turtles along the beach.
