About Olympic Valley, California

When most people think of California, they think of sun and beaches. They don't think about skiing and snow-topped mountains.

Well, Olympic Valley (also known as Squaw Valley) is sure to flip your assumptions about California on their head – it's one of the best ski resorts in America!

Just northwest of Tahoe City, this mining town turned ski resort was the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, and remains a popular destination for winter sports.

The resort itself was planned and built in 1942, before being opened on Thanksgiving 1949. There are powdery slopes and comfortable chair lifts to get you to the top of the mountain. What more could you need from a winter retreat?

But, it's not just good for winter – summer in Olympic Valley can also be a great adventure. The green forests are excellent for hiking and the view from the top of the mountains cannot be beaten.

What to do

In the winter, snow sports are the big thing in Olympic Valley. Go skiing, snowboarding, and tubing as well as snowmobiling – you can even get mini ones for the kids to try.

The resort also has ice skating rinks and dog sledding courses, so you can enjoy the mountain at your own pace.

For the rest of the year, you can try outdoor pursuits such as hiking, climbing and camping. It's a great spot for a bit of action and adventure!

The Aerial Tram is open all year round, so you can always reach the top of the mountain for the best views.
