About Grand Canyon National Park

Humans have been in the Grand Canyon National Park region since the paleo-Indian period... that's over 12,000 years ago!

Native Americans still live in a reservation on the Canyon’s south rim and in the canyon itself. It's worth spending time visiting the reservations. Meet members of the Havasupai (meaning people of the blue-green waters) and be sure to visit the Hopi and Navajo reservations.

Take your bathing suit with you to the Grand Canyon National Park. There are many pools with clear blue water to swim in.

There's lots of things to eat here. Try buffalo steak, or experience a Grand Canyon cookout with smoked beef brisket, roasted chicken, skillet cornbread and all the trimmings. You can get Mexican food and Italian too, but in the Grand Canyon, traditional American food is arguably the cuisine to go for!

The Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona is an awe-inspiring place, and a must-see for kids and adults alike.

What to do

To get a bird's eye view of the Grand Canyon National Park, go for a 45-minute helicopter flight from Tusayan.

You may want to take a trip on a mule, either one that lasts for a few hours, or an overnight trip. But if you do, you need to book well in advance of your visit. There are daily tours of the South Rim, but North Rim mule rides are seasonal, from mid-May through mid-October.

If you love cycling, you can either take your bike with you, or rent one and go on a guided South Rim bicycle tour (weather permitting!).

You can walk along the canyon rim at the South Rim and walk along the Trail of Time. Shuttle buses take you to either end of the trail from Yavapai Point where the geology museum is located, or from Verkamp's Visitor Center, east of the historic Grand Canyon Village.

If you love being on the water, go on a white-water raft trip on the Colorado River. Smooth water raft trips from Glen Canyon Dam to Lees Ferry are also available.

Top Grand Canyon National Park travel tips

There are lots of shuttle services you can get from the surrounding major cities, as well as some of the smaller towns around the South Rim.

If you want to switch Rims during your stay, there’s also a shuttle service for that from mid-May to mid-October.

One day tours of the canyon can be booked from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon Village.

You can take the Grand Canyon railway to Grand Canyon village, or Amtrak to and from Flagstaff.

You will need to plan your trip carefully and book transportation and trips well in advance to avoid disappointment.
