“Susan + Alan Visit” Our trip to Mahahual was most enjoyable! The house is quite beautiful inside, tiled throughout. There are shaded porches on 1st and 2nd floors looking out on palms, sea grapes and beach. There is a top viewing deck to observe countless stars with a resident iguana. They have an extensive library of books on sea life, plants, Mayan culture. Also, wireless connection was very much appreciated. The property is large, very private with pond and exceptional array of trees and plantings (some orchids) and numerous paths to explore. During 2 week stay the wind blew constantly - felt wonderful, kept bugs away; we were never hot. Last day, no wind, so numerous bugs. Coming in January, brief strong rainstorms came and went quickly nearly every day - dramatic and refreshing. For beach combing, no shells, but plenty of interesting seedpods. Recycling has not arrived in this remote area, so unfortunately the beach had plenty of discarded plastic. I realize concern for ecology is still new in most parts of the world. My friend enjoys birds, so with pelicans and frigate birds soaring overhead, we enjoyed a jay's serenade - remarkable vocal range. Glimpses of hummingbird, yellow banana twit, red headed woodpecker. With strong breeze and some water chop, I was concerned about water safety, yet realized wind and waves always came inland. I never found artificial reef directly out front, but spot to the right offered good snorkeling. Saw many striped grunts, blue tang, butterfly fish, Sergeant major, needlefish and spotted trunkfish. Also, saw several lionfish, blue parrotfish, 4 cuttlefish. Enjoyed visiting this spot regularly to more closely observe fish behavior. Travel to get there is a bit arduous. Driving dirt road from small town of Mahahual is challenging - deep potholes, slow going, but well worth the effort. For those who value spending time in a place with privacy and natural wonders to appreciate and enjoy, I highly recommend! Susan New Bedford, ma USa
