About Corozal, Belize

Corozal, Belize, was an important place on the early Mayan trading route map. Santa Rita, on the outskirts of Corozal, has a Mayan ruin which is thought to have been the important Maya city, Chetumal. Make sure you go visit this ancient city during your stay.

Corozal has a House of Culture which holds regular events featuring artists and music. One of its goals is to preserve the old market in the town, which is one of the best places to visit.

Traditional Belizean food comes in various forms—there are various corn dishes, tamales, relleno negro, tacos, chimole and escabeche, eaten by all ethnic groups within Belize. Beans and fish are staples of most meals.

What to do in Corozal

If you are lucky enough to be in Corozal during a festival, do go and take part. These events are colourful and vibrant and will make for great memories.

Visit the Mayan ruins of Santa Rita and learn about both them and modern Corozal from your guide. However, you can explore this small site alone after you have heard its history.

Go to the Cerros Archaeological Reserve on the shore of Corozal Bay. Get to it by boat, unless you have an all-terrain vehicle. Otherwise, walk to it through the rain forest - that's an adventure in itself.

Shipstern Nature Reserve in nearby Sarteneja has some good hiking trails, although you need a guide for some. If water is more your thing, why not charter a boat and go fishing?

If you're out for excitement, go cave tubing and try zip-lining on one of the tours offered by Wet 'n Wild.

For a more laid back holiday, laze on the beach or in a hammock and relax with a cocktail made from freshly squeezed fruit juice. Delicious!

Top travel tips for Corozal

The best way to get around is to rent a car. However, there are local buses, which will transport you from A to B. You can also get cabs in Corozal town.

You can always rent a bicycle to get around. However, in Corozal it's easiest to get around on foot.

There are two foreign banks with ATMs in Corozal town that take Visa and MasterCard. The Belize Bank has an ATM, but it is not always reliable so make sure you come prepared with cash.

You will find places to eat and shop on Sundays, but a lot of Corozal's local businesses are closed. Make sure you bear this in mind when planning your time!
