“Serenity!” I needed a place to renew, refresh, and restore after care taking for my husband that had cancer this past year. The Cottage at Sunnybank was the perfect place to renew my joy! Simple and clean. The surroundings are breathtaking from a creek at the end of the property, to historic land markings, surrounded by beautiful green hills. Ann was super attentive...when I mentioned taking a walk after the rain, a pair of rain boots and socks appeared on my doorstep! All the food provided was high end, quality...I became addicted to the granola! The bed was comfy and the sheets felt elegant...I am clueless when it comes to directions, but my hostess furnished me with hand drawn maps, including places to park, and sights to see in Charlottesville. It was a quiet, reflective time...I fell in love with my surroundings and hope to visit soon with my hubby!

“Just like home” Debra and her team did an amazing job with this unique house and you can tell a lot of time and love went into the design. Debra was so sweet and welcoming. She even stocked the cookie jar with yummy cookies from a local bakery. The house was clean, the beds were comfortable and the location couldn't have been better. We were able to walk to and from the downtown mall area, eliminating the need for taxis. We had such a wonderful time during our stay in Charlottesville and would definitely recommend the Recycled House, especially to small groups of people who want to stay together. It was our home away from home! Thanks Debra!

“Lovely people; surprisingly large space.” We stayed here for two week during 2013. I mainly wanted something nicer than a dorm or hotel room so my spouse could get work done while I was at Uva's Rare Book School. This surpassed our expectations. It was spacious, nicely decorated, two bathrooms, a study, and a living room (with a large tv). The wifi worked well, even during a bit storm. The owners's were so friendly (as were their dogs). I needed to have things shipped there in advance, and this was all taken care of for me. It was a bit of a drive from UVa and Charlottesville, but we had a car, so it wasn't an issue. I can't recommend it enough.

“If you want peace and quiet and total relaxation, this is the pl” Making reservations and checking in is a very pleasant and personal experience at Cabin Creekwood. You almost feel like family by the time you are ready to leave. The cabin itself is awesome; not musty or damp like you might think a "Civil War" cabin would be. Everything is there for you right down to the candles for your bath in the claw-foot tub. Just minutes from any of the best restaurants you might want to visit, theres nothing inconvenient about the location. We love the rushing creek behind the cabin and the porch swing. We were truly relaxed and refreshed!

Charlottesville holidays

Charlottesville, Virginia

Charlottesville, Virginia always ranks high when it comes to best places to live. The city is refined yet vibrant thanks to the campus of the University of Virginia. This, together with a historic past, makes for a great holiday destination. To find the right Charlottesville holiday book, browse and book on Holiday Lettings.

About Charlottesville

Charlottesville is named after British King George III’s wife, Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and is located in the centre of the State of Virginia.

Sitting along the Rivanna River in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville is 70 miles from the state capital Richmond and 115 miles from the nation’s capital Washington DC.

Home to both Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, the town owes much to the legacy of the former presidents.

Playing only a bit part in the Revolutionary War, Charlottesville was spared the destruction and burning that the State of Virginia suffered at the hands of the Union Army during the Civil War, except for a skirmish with General George Armstrong Custer in which the Yankee fled after thinking he was up against a superior force.

Today, Charlottesville is a trendy university town with a pedestrianised centre full of hip restaurants and bars.

What to do in Charlottesville

The number one spot on any tourist’s itinerary has to be a visit to Thomas Jefferson’s home at Monticello. Built and then re-built over 40 years, Monticello and its gardens are a reflection on what life was like for a plantation owner during the Revolutionary period.

After seeing how Jefferson lived, the next logical step is to visit his greatest achievement, the University of Virginia. Founded in 1819, the nearly 1,700-acre campus is a colonial work of art surrounded by majestic lawns.

Being so close to the Blue Ridge Mountains, you cannot go home without taking Skyline Drive through Shenaandoah National Park. The scenery is so spectacular that the speed limit along the 105-mile route is posted at 35mph to help avoid accidents.

Shenaandoah is also the place to go for hiking, biking, canoeing, horseback riding, fishing, bird watching, and astronomy.

Top Charlottesville travel tips

With four distinct seasons, the best time to see Charlottesville at its best is during the fall when the students are back on campus following summer holiday and the leaves are changing colour along Skyline Drive.

With the town having no professional sports teams nearby, the U. Va Cavaliers have a huge following. Try to attend a football game and join in with the crowd as they link arms and sing “The Good Old Song” following a hometown touchdown.

During the summer, Charlottesville’s downtown brick lined shops come alive for “Fridays After Five” with live music and festivities throughout the night.

Whether you visit as a couple or as a family, Charlottesville is the American South at its best. Full of history and ideally suited for mountain excursions, make this your next holiday destination. You can find a wide range of Charlottesville holiday rental properties to suit all needs by visiting Holiday Lettings.
