The Eastern Finland region
Koli has many faces. To many, Koli is Finland's most beautiful natural attraction. Koli National Park and the surroundings provide a unique combination of internationally recognized natural and cultural attractions together with a broad range of quality tourist services in all seasons.
Koli is one of the Finland's best-known national landscapes. The Koli hills are remain of the Karelids, a mountain chain that was formed two billion years ago. The highest peak of the Koli Hills, Ukko-Koli, rises 347 metres above the sea level. It is also the highest point in Southern Finland.
Koli is one of the few places which will generate high emotions both for first-time visitors and the experienced ones. In Koli National Park it will alternate between lush groves, barren rocks, flowery glades and shady spruce copses. The surface of Lake Pielinen gives its own unique characteristic for Koli and the national park. Finnsheep and native Finncattle are grazing in the cultural scenery in the meadows of the national park.
The cultural bounty of Koli is strong. Koli is remembered for burn-beaten land, for a destination of the hiking adherents of Karelianism in the 19th and 20th century, for folklore and for keeping up the local traditional culture. The lookout spots of the artists, white quartzite rocks, Lake Pielinen with its surrounding wilderness, burn-beating, traditional landscape, excellent trail and ski track network together with multifaceted services makes Koli a great destination for a day visit or even for a longer hiking tour.
The delightful national landscape is accessible even by taking a relaxing ride on a horseback of an Icelandic horse or sitting on a chair lift of Ukko-Koli. You will get a different perspective on the landscape when you paddle, row, boat or cruise on Lake Pielinen.
The highlight of the summer, known as Koli Outdoor Activity Week 30.6.-8.7. offers a dream week for outdoor people with hundreds of hours of guided programmes. The Herajärvi TraiI, which was awarded the title of “Trekking Destination of 2007 in Finland”, has extended and offers now a 60 km long challenging hiking route.
Also the other shorter hiking routes in the national park will take you to enjoy awesome views over lakes and hills. In autumn (October 6th) the marathon race “Vaarojen Maraton” will take place.
The cultural bounty of Visitor Centre Ukko providing information on Koli National Park, the villages of Koli and Vuonislahti and the Finnish Stone Center bring an excellent addition to satisfy a visitor´s hunger for culture. Koli – in the middle of North Karelia, offers the possibility to easily explore other places of interest in the surrounding area. The environs of Lake Pielinen, Karelian milieus of Bomba and Ilomantsi, Ruunaa Hiking Area, Lieksa Brass Week, Ilosaarirock in Joensuu, the New Valamo Monastery and the Lintula Holy Trinity Convent in Heinävesi, national parks of Petkeljärvi, Patvinsuo and Tiilikkajärvi, golf courses and border of peace are all close to Koli.
Biathlon stadium in Kontiolahti where hosts World Cup Biathlon - 46km. In 2015, there will be world championship.
