The South Thailand / Surat Thani region
This paradise island is located on the East coast, almost in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand. It’s an small island, little more than 21 km2 and can only be reached by boat from Chumphon or Surat Thani on the mainland.
They are many beautiful beaches and bays around Koh Tao, both large and small. To the most of the beaches you can go by motorbike or on foot but some of them can only be reached by long-tail boat.
Koh Tao means “Turtle Island”. Despite the name, it’s not many turtles left, unfortunately. But they can appear sometime every now or then. But Koh Tao is blessed with clear water and beautiful reefs, and there is about 25 dive-sites around the island.
As Koh Tao is an tiny island there are no airport here, you can only go to Koh Tao by boat. A little messy perhaps some people think. But this is not a bad thing, the good things that come with this is that the island has no mass tourism and charter tourism as many other places in Thailand. Sure, the tourism has left its mark, for the better and the worse, but both Thais and foreigners are more aware and want to preserve this wonderful island.
Be aware & care!
The Koh Tao area
Although Koh Tao is a quite small island, there’s plenty to do. There is always something for everyone. Here is a selection:
* Scuba Diving and Snorkeling
Scuba diving and the snorkeling is among the better in Thailand and the cheapest. Thousands come to Koh Tao every year to learn how to dive, so it’s no wonder that there are about 50 diveshops around the island.
They offer courses from Open water to Instructor and they have merged so that all have the same fee. If you don’t want to dive, dive centers offer snorkeling tours around the island for a few hundred baht.
* Massage & Spa
Thai massage can be find almost everywhere. All with varying prices, but the most common is the 1-hour Thai massage costs about 300 baht, Oil massage about 400 bath and Aloe Vera massage about 500 baht.
Our favorite place is just 5 min walk down the hill from our house in Mae Haad, Kinaree Massage. One of the best Spas on Koh Tao is Jamahkiri Resort & Spa. Well worth a visit!
* Thai-boxing
Try an incredible funny, tough and good form of exercise on you vacation. There are 2 training centers for Thai-boxing on the island.
* Gym and Fitness
If you don't want to relax on the beaches or go diving all the time then stop by at Koh Tao's great gym in Sairee Village.
* Bowling & Mini golf
Are you tired of sunbathing you can enjoy a round of bowling or mini golf. Both fun and social. And it is just a 5 minute walk from the house.
* Cooking classes
Learn the secret of cooking good Thai-food, our hostess On and many restaurants offers courses and you can also eat the food that you cooked.
* Yoga
Shambhala Yoga Centre at Sairee Beach offers a variety of Hatha yoga styles, Pranayam and meditation led by international qualified experienced teacher.
* Climbing, Trekking, Mountain Biking, Kayaking, Zip-line
On Koh Tao are several operators of other more challenging outdoor activities. GoodTime Adventues has a wide selections to keep your days occupied if you want to do other than dive, swim or sunbathe.

There are several ways to reach Koh Tao...
The easiest way is flying to Bangkok and then take the domestic flight to Koh Samui. With Bankok Airways you reach Koh Samui in about 50 minutes. From Koh Samui, take a boat to Koh Tao. The trip with Lomprahya takes aprox. 90 min.
Another way is to fly to Phuket and minibuss or taxi to SuratThani and then speedboat (Lomprayah).
You can also take a bus from Bangkok to Chumpon. This bus trip takes about six hours. From Chumpon, take an hour trip by boat to Koh Tao.
If you prefer to travel by train, this will take a longer time to Koh Tao but on the other hand you can book a sleeping-van to Chumpon and then the boat to Koh Tao.
We recommend Lomprayah catamaran boat before any other boats, from Koh Samui or Chumpon.

We enjoyed our 10 day stay at Villa Moore. The house is comfortable & well-equipped, with 2 bathrooms and 3 double bedrooms, all with air conditioning. The small pool was most welcome and well used, as was the outdoor shower. The house is located in an elevated position and the sea views from both the lower terrace and upper terrace & lounge are great. You can walk to the ferry terminal area, where there is a good selection of shops & places to eat, but a quad bike or scooter is very useful for getting to & from Villa Moore and around Koh Tao. The Villa owner arranges free transfers from & to the ferry for guests. |
