Welcome to Graiguenamanagh, the Village of the Monks, located in County Kilkenny, in the sunny south east of Ireland.
Mount Brandon is one of the South-East’s most attractive self-catering holiday cottages. Our two holiday cottages are located just outside of Graiguenamanagh only 5 minutes’ walk from the river Barrow – ideal for pike and coarse fishing.
Did you know that Graiguenamanagh has a good few claims to fame? Here are just two: Check out PEG WASHINGTON'S LANE, supposedly the world's smallest street (we will tell you where to find it). And: Did you know that it was a cow from Graiguenamanagh, which started the Great Chicago Fire???
Mount Brandon self-catering holiday cottages offer an excellent touring base for those wanting to explore the "Medieval capital of Ireland“, Kilkenny, as well as Carlow, Enniscorthy, Wexford or Waterford. We are ideally based for golfing holidays in Ireland, with Mount Juliet golf club only a short drive away.

The South East Ireland / County Kilkenny region
Graiguenamanagh or the "Village of the Monks" is a beautiful little village situated in the Barrow Valley. Mount Brandon overlooks the town, which is surrounded by a patchwork of fields and meadows. The town is full of history, starting with the abbey, which was founded in 1204. You will also find the smallest street in the world here called "Peg Washington's Lane" and locals will tell you that the cow that started the great Chicago fire came from Graiguenamanagh. There are a lot of pubs (11 on my last count) in Graigue, a lot of them offering pub grub, music and "the craic". Check them out.
We are situated only 30 minutes drive from Kilkenny city, which was once the capital of Ireland. 40 minutes of a car journey will get you to Waterford, 20 minutes to New Ross, where the Dunbrody Famine Ship needs to be visited.
For a leasurely afternoon why not visit Inistioge, the film village, where "Widow's Peak", "Circle of Friends" etc. were filmed. Make sure to visit Woodstock Demesne with some of the best specimen trees in Europe.
The Graiguenamanagh / Tinnahinch area
Graiguenamanagh is a medieval river town which dates back to the 13th century when Duiske Abbey, the largest Cistercian Monastery in Ireland, was established at the junction of the rivers Barrow and Duiske (Dubh Uisce Black Water). The monks are long since gone, but the Abbey remains. It is a vibrant church for the local community blessed with fantastic acoustics that have rung to the sounds of many famous voices, such as the Vienna Boys Choir and Ireland’s top traditional group, The Chieftains. Traditionally the Duiske Concerts take place in November of each year.
Graiguenamanagh also hosts the TOWN OF BOOKS FESTIVAL in September of each year, where booksellers come from all corners of Ireland and abroad to value books and find new homes for them.
At the river there is a magical mix of life and activity. Fishermen cast their flies for trout and salmon, and coarse fisherman pit their wits against myriads of Bream, Roach, Dace, Perch and some big big Pike.

Directions from ROSSLARE Ferryport:
From ROSSLARE HARBOUR take the N25 towards Waterford an Cork. Just before NEW ROSS turn right onto the N30/N70 and follow this road, as it by-passes NEW ROSS and then turns right, heading towards KILKENNY and ENNISCORTHY. Turn left onto the R700 towards KILKENNY and then turn right again onto the R 705 (clearly signposted for CARLOW). This road will bring you through THE ROWER into GRAIGUENAMANAGH, where you will come to a roundabout. Take the second exit for the town centre.
Follow this road down the hill to the town’s main street, where you will come to a T-junction, Duiske Abbey (the church) is just in front of you. Here you should turn right, following the sign for ENNISCORTHY.
Go straight on, taking the bridge across the river Barrow. Within less than ½ mile you will see Mount Brandon Cottages (painted bright yellow with green gables) ahead of you on the left. Continue up the hill to the entrance gates which are sign-posted “Mount Brandon Cottages”. Turn in left and follow the drive.

Directions from DUBLIN
From DUBLIN head down south on the Motorway (M7 & M9) towards NAAS, continue through CARLOW town and further south towards BAGENALSTOWN.
Having passed a large garden centre on your left (Leighlinbridge Arboretum) continue on the main CARLOW-KILKENNY ROAD for approx. 1.5 km.
Take the turn off at ROYAL OAK to your left heading for BAGENALSTOWN. Drive through BAGENALSTOWN and continue on towards BORRIS, where you will see the first signs for GRAIGUENAMANAGH.
Follow these signs (the ones for “WATERSIDE RESTAURANT” are also good landmarks) drive through the roundabout, continue through the town centre and cross over the bridge (river Barrow).
Continue on straight for less than ½ mile. On your left hand side (2nd entrance) you will see a sign for Mount Brandon Cottages (the houses are painted bright yellow with green gables).

We very much enjoyed our visit at Mount Brandon Cottages. We (my husband and three children-9,6,and 4) traveled to Graiguenamanagh during the USA Thanksgiving Holiday week. I was researching family history, and very much loved the area. We were lucky to have sun during most of our stay. Andrea was the perfect hostess. She also pointed me in the right direction for further family research. The cottage was perfect and contained everything we needed. The town is great. After check-in and a thorough tour of the cottage, we were able to scoot into town for a grocery run. Got all the basics and were set for the rest of our stay. The next morning, Andrea showed the children around the farm. Truth be told, I believe the children would rather visit with Andrea and the farm all week! Thank you for a wonderful visit. We hope to be back soon. |

We were very happy with all aspects of our stay with Andrea at her homes in Graignanmanagh. We were staying there because of a family funeral, not a holiday... Andrea was flexible, and understanding of our requirements . The houses 1 and 2 were both furnished and fitted out to a high standard with attention to detail. |

Would Highly recommend Mount Brandon Cottages the surroundings are breath taking the owners are very friendly & helpful people what a Great place to stay hopefully we will be back in the near future. |
