“Lovely piece of old Japan” My family of 5 just had an extremely memorable and comfortable stay at the beautifully conserved Gion House. We took the whole upper level and the 2 rooms, 1 living room, fully equipped kitchen and extremely spacious bathroom was just perfect. I've stayed at quite a few Japanese homes of friends but none with the authenticity and modern comforts of Gion House. The experience of staying at a true blue machiya right smack in Gion is indescribable. The location was unbeatable - round the corner from the house is the famous Gion district of carefully conserved traditonal restaurants and Gion Corner, the cultural theatre. It's a 3 minute walk out to another main road and you're 1 (or was it 2) bus stops away from the famous Kiyomizu temple. It's also walking distance to Kodai-ji, another important temple and the charming cobblestoned streets of Ninnenzaka and Sannenzaka filled with wooden, old-styled Japanese shophouses selling high Japanese crafts, paintings, ceramics, delicious green tea confectionary and soft serve icecream, artisanal rice crackers .. the list is endless. Right at the start of Ninnenzaka is an udon (noodle) restaurant, Omen, that's not to be missed. One always feels some trepidation when booking a homestay off the Internet and I'm happy that my anxiety was proven to be unfounded. The eye to detail and comfort, all the facilities that we take for granted until something goes wrong - a water heater that delivers consistent heat, working airconditioners/heaters, clean tableware - all were in perfect working order. And don't overlook Curtis' small collection of old books on Japan. My eldest boy loved the volume of Stoddard's Lectures on Japan which he finished reading. Junko (from the company another World which manages Gion House and it sister property, Gion apartments) was extremely helpful over the phone even though I had to bother her on a Sunday morning. Thanks to Curtis for being a big part of our wonderful family holiday in Japan!
