“A home away from home!” From the moment I sent an email inquiring about the availability of the house, Reiko & Thomas were incredibly helpful! Once I had made my booking, any requests or questions I had regarding Kyoto or the house were answered promptly and in a very friendly and incredibly helpful manner. We did have a little trouble locating the house, only due to receiving incorrect directions from the bus driver, even though Reiko supplied us with a map to the property, but the locals were very helpful and friendly and showed us to the property. We suggest that you catch a taxi from Kyoto train station which is only around 10,000 yen, initially until you know where the property is, show the taxi driver the map in Japanese and when you are there you will find that the main roads have the street name written in English and Japanese, which we found made it much easier to find places. When we did arrive we absolutely loved the property as soon as we walked in, it was very neat and very clean and it is such a beautiful little house, every comfort needed is supplied! We absolutely loved staying there, it truly did come to feel like a home away from home to us and this was the very first time we have ever traveled overseas. The location of the property was great, only 10 mins walk from the subway and there is a great little Seven Eleven about 4 mins walk from the house and it is priced very well indeed, our favourite pit stop. The steps in the house are quite steep, but I enjoyed the exercise and as long as you go down them slowly you will be fine! The Wi-fi is fantastic and I loved the washing machine/dryer, it was awesome and I want one!! lol We booked a morning and afternoon Kyoto tour which was a great way to see some of the shrines and temples, but Reiko has a map on the table that has many great places to see highlighted also, it was very helpful to us! We just want to say thank you so very much for everything and if we end up back in Kyoto I know where we will be staying! :-)))

“Amazing!” We had 5 days in Kyoto and our amazing time there was enhanced further by staying in the upper level of this gorgeous house. Excellent location for the old town and walks on the temple trail. House was very clean with everything you could need for a comfortable and relaxing stay (we particularly enjoyed the japanese bathing ritual in the lovely bathroom at the end of a full days walking and exploring). Both the owner and the agent in Japan were professional, helpful and knowledgable and we would definately book here again should we ever get the opportunity to return to Kyoto.

“wonderful, authentic experience” I don't think even many Japanese residents get to experience living in a traditional house like this anymore. This property is everything the description says and more. It is clean, beautiful, authentic and surprisingly spacious. It's not in the description, but there are 2 toilets, which I think is a Japanese luxury in this size property. The doorways and stairway head clearance is low, but that's part of the experience - if you're over 5'10" or so, you'll be ducking a lot everywhere in Japan. What a perfect combination of modern conveniences and traditional living. We landed in Kyoto in a major heat spell (over 90F every day) but the machiya was an oasis with super quiet, efficient air conditioner in every room, washer/dryer, fast wifi, etc. The location is excellent just as described, so I won't go into that. Suffice it to say everything in the description is accurate. It's also located in a small side street so it's very quiet. The grocery store around the corner was great, but be aware that they don't open until 9:30am so get your breakfast fare the night before if you want to have breakfast in the machiya. (Kitchen is very well equipped and the grocery has lots of prepared foods if you don't want to cook from scratch). The machiya was more than enough to make the visit fantastic, but it was topped by Rieko-san, one of the owners. She can beat any top hotel concierges! She had a solution to every question I asked prior to arrival and she even anticipated my needs before I even knew - like the sleeping set up after realizing I had 2 grown children who would take up more space and the departure arrangements working around a local festival traffic. She was always there when we needed anything but never in our way. Our family is already talking about the next time we stay here!
