Elkins holidays

About Elkins

This impressive city in Randolph County is named after its celebrated son Stephen Benton Elkins. A US senator from 1891 to 1893, Elkins and his father-in-law, US Senator Henry Gassaway Davis, made sure the town received both railroad lines and coalmines. Today, the Davis and Elkins College is named after them.

So progressive was the city during the 19th century that it attracted such visitors as Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Richard Nixon and Jemmy Carter, as well as other less-well known but aspiring presidential candidates. And it's still a popular spot today!

Surrounded by mountains and forestry, there are great opportunities for outdoor pursuits. Campgrounds, picnic parks, bird watching, hiking trails, boating, hunting and fishing… there really is something for every outdoors lover to do here. It's a great base for exploring, but also boasts some pretty fine architecture and entertainment downtown. Cheque that out, too!

What to do

Explore Visit West Virginia's largest complex of caverns. Sitting just 50 miles east of Elkins this fascinating underground wonderland was discovered in 1760. Tours have been organised here since the 1930s.

Photograph the tall, amber-coloured waterfall in Blackwater Falls State Park. Sitting just one hour north of Elkins, it's one of many attractions in this lovely expanse of woodland and mountains.

Chill out with some old time fiddling at Pickin' in the Park. Held on Wednesday afternoons at the College over five weeks in July and August it's a great way to hear some Bluegrass, Cajun and Irish tunes.

Sit back and enjoy the scenery on a steam train, courtesy of the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad. a two-hour trip includes dinner.

Go visit the Welcome Center. It has a train museum and incredibly friendly staff who'll point out all the great locations to cover on your holiday.
