About Eatonton, Georgia

This little town in Putnam County, Georgia got its name from William Eaton, who played a major role in the First Barbary War.

However, the Eatonton’s history goes further back than that. Head on up to the Rock Eagle Effigy mound—it's a Native American archaeological site somewhere between 1,000 and 3,000 years old.

The town itself formed in 1807, and is tucked between two lakes: Oconee and Sinclair. Famous for being the 'Dairy Capital of Georgia', it's often overlooked as a tourist destination, so it won't be too busy during your visit.

You'll feel like you've been taken back in time when you see the antebellum homes lining the streets and get a feel for that famous southern hospitality.

There are plenty of opportunities for shopping, culture and recreation. Some would say this is the perfect holiday spot—and you're bound to be one of them.

What to do

The Plaza Arts Center is a popular spot for all tourists—they always have something good on. See if you can catch an exhibit or show during your stay.

The town just opened the Old School Museum, which promises to be a great day out for you and the kids. Find out what schools used to be like back in the 'olden days', and be thankful they've improved since then!

Fishing fanatics will love it in Eatonton—it's a great spot with lots of opportunities to catch big trophy-winning fish.

If you're looking for something a little more energetic, try kayaking, paddle boarding or rowing on the lake—there are plenty of water sports for you to choose from.

If you're a fan of golf, there's a course that looks out over the beautiful scenery. It’s quite a challenge—even for the seasoned golfer!
