Found on Lake Erie’s southern shore at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, Cleveland became a major manufacturing centre due to its Great Lakes location and connections to railways and canals.
Cleveland grew rapidly following the completion of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1832 that effectively connected the Gulf of Mexico via the Ohio and Mississippi River to the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence Seaway.
