Barbados is a coral island which stands apart from the other Caribbean islands and is fortunate to lie outside the huricane belt. It enjoys 3000 hours of sunshine annually and average temperatures of 84-88* F (29-31*C) On the rare occasions when it rains, the spectacle is worth seeing! The sea is glorious -- warm, clear and safe. The local currency is the Barbados $ but US $ are also taken. The tap water is safe to drink.
The Fishermans Pub in Speightstown stages a limbo dancing exhibition on a Wednesday night. Its cheap, cheerful and fun particularly if a steel band is playing and the friendly locals turn out to dance. During the day, streetsellers offer fruit, vegetables and artwork. There are doctors, dentists, pharmacies, supermarkets & banks within easy reach. Fresh fish is plentiful and inexpensive.
The Speightstown area
Holetown is about 10 minutes drive away and offers assorted bars, live music, cabaret and many restaurants.
Old plantation houses such as St Nicholas' Abbey and Sunbury Plantation put on interesting tours and rum tastings.
The east coast of the island faces the Atlantic ocean and so is different in character to the gentle Caribbean Sea. It is worth going to Crane Beach though to play in the surf and experience what the Sunday Times listed as one of the top 10 beaches in the world.
Bathsheba is an exceptionally picturesque spot on the east coast.. Whilst down in this part of the island you are close to the Concorde exhibition, located at the airport.
Horse racing and polo are popular on the island and make for a great day out. The George Washington museum is nearby.
St Lawrence Gap, towards the South of the island is more bustling and home to the nightclubs.
Bridgetown has a huge number of jewellers shops, bewilderingly large displays of emeralds and diamonds and keen duty free prices.
Crop Over in August is the time when the island parades, drinks rum, dances and has fun.

Jacaranda is a luxurious, immaculately-kept, and beautifully-decorated apartment. The owner provides everything you could possibly need for living, cooking, and enjoying the area. The view from the private terrace is a wide vista of the Caribbean sea and sky; the sunsets are some of the most spectacular I've ever seen, and at night the constellations are clearly visible. The beach in front of the apartment is clean, lovely, and peaceful; we had it to ourselves much of the time and enjoyed snorkeling right there, where there is plenty of coral. We especially liked that the apartment is in Speightstown, far enough away from the very touristy areas to feel as if you are authentically in Barbados, but lively during the day with shops and restaurants and friendly people, and peaceful at night. Jacaranda is highly recommended. |

My wife and I stayed at Jacaranda, White Sands in January 2013. We were so looking forward to our stay in Barbados for a number of reasons and in particular our stay at this appartment. We had read... more |

We really enjoyed our stay at Jacaranda, which felt more like staying at a friend's home than in holiday accommodation. The upper floor is a very large double height open plan kitchen / diner / sitting area opening out to a large terrace directly overlooking the turquoise sea. The kitchen is large and very well equipped, including a large fridge with ice maker, dishwasher, and large cooker, and we were able to cook full meals easily and eat on the large circular table. In the mornings we ate breakfast on the terrace with the two fly-catcher birds, overlooking the sea, and in the evening watch the sunset. The apartment is very well equipped, with books, games, ipod dock, snorkelling gear, beach chairs and games , a cool box, a local mobile phone and binoculars for looking at the stars and ships. The location is excellent – a short walk into Speightstown to the south, and beach directly in front of the property, with Port St Charles beach just to the north. Holetown is a short drive for the famous restaurants, and you can walk to Mullins and Gibbs beaches along the coast. Kevin the owner was extremely helpful from our first email, to handing over the keys, and provided us with detailed and accurate recommendations on booking. The guest book is also a source of useful information. We really cannot think of any aspect of the property, or our dealing with the owner, that we did not like. |
