Further details indoors

The house is located on a hillside with a sloping garden and a large open deck looking due west into the mountains. The entire west wall of the house is glass, so the delights of Patagonia's changing weather unfold before your eyes. A wood-burnig fireplace is located in the west wall of the sitting area to provide a warming cheerful blaze while still permitting viewing of the magnificent vista. There are 2 deck areas, one is always out of the wind, one on the east side and the other partially screened by a glass windbreak on the west side. A fire pit provides the opportunity to share wine and picadas while warding off the evening chill. Artwork and prints from local artists adorn the walls.

Further details outdoors

Gravel paths lead through the extensive plantings. Much of the indigenous vegetation was preserved on the lot and it abounds with local wildlife: buff necked ibis, southern lapwings, California quail and the Patagonian hare and the introduced European rabbit are frequent visitors. The Jack Nicklaus golf course with clubhouse is less than 500 meters from the house, two tennis courts are less than 200 meters from the house and the Rio Quilquihue 2km away offers fly fishing.

Further details

A 3-day minimum is requested. This is a no-smoking residence. The house is wheelchair accessible with the master bedroom, kitchen, dining and lounge areas all easily accessed. The master bathroom has only shower that is not wheelchair accessible, but a sponge bath can be taken/administered in the master bathroom. Because of the wire stanchions protecting the stairwell, the house is not suitable for children under 5.

The Patagonia region

Patagonia is a huge, sparsely populated region extending from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Coast across the 40th parallel south to the tip of Tierra del Fuego. The area receives about 400mm of rain and 100km to the west in Puerto Varas, Chile 1800mm of rain falls. The house is at 900 mts elevation and is on the eastern edge of the Lake District where the nearby Chapelco Ski Resort (40km distant) provides wonderful family fun (JUN-SEP). Ample snowfall supplies the region with pure water that hosts huge populations of large wild trout in famous rivers such as the Chimehuin, Collon Cura, Malleo and Alumine to name a few. The fly fishing season runs NOV-MAY. The nearby mountains provide excellent hiking, biking and birding activities and the lakes and rivers provide rafting, boating, kayaking and beach activities.

San Martin de los Andes

San Martin de los Andes is magical tourist town of 35,000 with only 1 stop sign, clean streets, bustling shops, a huge selection of restaurants, a chocolate shop on every block and seldom does one hear a horn beep. From the lakefront, spreading inland up the valley, San Martin, with its alpine architecture, has something for everyone. There is a casino and nightclubs for night owls, but for most it is town full of energy brought by those who really enjoy outdoor activities. A local exhibition center features local artists and there are seasonal theatrical and choral presentations. The annual horse expo (La Rural in JAN) and Argentina's largest rodeo (El Puestero in FEB) where gauchos ride for a purse and bragging rights in nearby Junin de los Andes are pure Patagonia at its best.
