Home description
Riad Papillon is a wonderful oasis in the middle of the colourful souks of the medina in Marrakech. Our philosophy is that we want all our guests to feel truly welcome and to be able to relax here away from the busy souks. We love Morocco and we hope you will too.
You will be picked up from the airport (£15 each way) and taken to your riad hotel where you will be welcomed by our wonderful Moroccan staff. You are free to relax in your room, by the small zelige pool in the patio garden area , in the bhou or on the roof terrace where, on a clear day you can see the Atlas mountains in the distance.
Our rooms are small as are most of the riad rooms but they contain a few nice surprises such as minibars, tvs, wifi internet, cotton robes, hairdryers etc. The location of our riad is perfect. Our beds are wonderful to sleep in, our cook is very talented and our prices are good. You can take over the whole riad and self cater or you can use our staff.

The Marrakech / Essaouira / Marrakech Region
Marrakesh is a fantastic base from which to explore central Morocco. An incredible variety of experiences is available even within a comfortable one day trip.
The picturesque town of Essaouira is only two hours drive from Marrakech and offers an outstanding day excursion to the coast. Under Portuguese occupation the port was fortified and the town was known as Mogador, the ramparts were used in Orson Welles 1952 film Othello. Still a fishing village Essaouira retains its authenticity and charm.
Your Ryad staff will be pleased to help you to organise a visit to Essaouira. Our suggestion would be to take a taxi for the day and return to the ryad in Marrakech after a leisurely meal in the early evening.
Marrakech City / Medina area
Traditional Medina living is very much a communal activity. There is abundant evidence of this in day to day life, for example trays of dough for bread or cakes are a common sight on Marrakesh streets as they are taken to the local bakery to be cooked.
However nothing exemplifies this sharing of resource and experience more than the traditional Hammam since most Medina houses did not contain showers until relatively recently.
The Marrakech Souks are great fun to explore whether on your own or with a guide. For centuries craftsmen and merchants have congregated in specialist souks including areas for metalworkers, leatherworkers, dyers, carpets, spices, traditional medicines and many others.
There was a time when the persistent attention of hustlers and self appointed guides made it difficult for the faint hearted to explore and enjoy the Souks. Today the whole area is effectively policed by specialist Tourist Brigade Police and tour guides are licensed.
