House | 5 bedrooms | sleeps 10
Renovated in 2009, Dar Sugar is a large, comfortable house which has been decorated with flair. As well as incorporating modern facilities it still retains the cedar wood, iron and zellig (traditional Moroccon tiling) of the ancient house. It is situated deep in the Medina (a UNICEF World Heritage site) convenient to restaurants, shopping, parking and taxis and all the highlights and surprises that Fes has to offer; yet, it remains an oasis of calm in the Medieval Theatre that is Fes.
The house sleeps up to 10 people comfortably, including one occasional bed, with Egyptian cotton on all the beds. On arrival you will find a Welcome Basket which includes yoghurt, bread and jams, bottled water, fruit and a bottle of wine. Breakfast and daily cleaning is included in the rate. Other meals are available on request. Smoking is allowed on the Terraces but not inside the house.

About this location
The Fes-Boulemane Region
Fes is one of Morocco's Imperial Cities and a UNESCO World Heitage Site. The medieval Medina is the largest car free urban area in the world with thousands of interconnecting alleys only accesable by donkey or foot.
Fes is the second largest city in Morocco after Casablanca with a population of approximately 1 million. It has three distinct areas: Fes el Bali, the old walled city or Medina; Fes-Jdid, new Fes with the Mella, and the Ville Nouveau which was created by the French.
If you wish to experience another area of Morocco on a day tour, Meknes and Voloubilis are in easy reach and you can enjoy the countryside along the way. Other day trips include a visit to a vineyard and an olive oil cooperative, or perhaps go on a trip into the mountains near Fes. All of these, as well as cookery classes, can be arranged through our house manager.
A highlight of the Fes calendar is The Festival of Sacred Music. It is now in its 19th year and is acclaimed as one of the best music festivals in the world. You can watch performers from all corners of the globe.
Dar sugar, while conveniently situated near to many of the treasures and delights that the Fes Medina has to offer, is off the beaten tourist track. Close by is the local market where you will see huge tubs of of olives, pyramids of spices and pastel coloured blocks of nougat piled high as well as many cafes and restaurants. We suggest that on your first day you take an official tour with a guide (we can arrange this) who will walk you through the narrow alleyways to various points of interest and speak about the history of Fes, Moroccon culture, religion and politics.
Fes is a fascinating city to explore, full of sights and sounds not easy to replicate anywhere else. Join the locals shopping in the wonderful markets full of seasonal fruit and vegetables. Sit in a cafe with a mint tea and sweet pastry and watch the metalsmiths at Place Seffarine then wander through the Medina visiting some of the workshops where, amongst many other crafts, leather, pottery and carpets can be purchased. When you want to explore the rest of Fes, Bab Guisa is a short walk away where you can catch a local taxi.

Henri Clement
