About this location

The Fes-Boulemane Region

The town of "Medinat Fas" was founded by Idriss the First in 789, in the current location of the Andalous district. In 809, Idriss the Second founded "al-Aliya" on the other bank of Wadi Fez. Al Aliya swiftly grew and became a true city with a mosque, palace and kisariya (market).

Even before the town of Fez was founded, the springs of drinking water thereabouts were known and praised in songs. They were undoubtedly an important factor in the choice of location for the future metropolis.

The following developments were due to two successive waves of immigration. In 817-818, nearly 800 Andalusian families who had been evicted by the Omeyyades from the Spanish town of Cordoba, settled in the town founded by Idriss the First. A short time afterwards, around 2000 families banished from Kairouan, settled on the other bank.

Fez is an unmissable "city-museum." Milling with people and full of colour, it has stunning decoration, such as the medina of Fez el Bali, one of the largest cities in the world of the medieval type.

The town of Fez is divided into three parts : Fez el Jedid (semi-old Fez) and Fez el Bali (old Fez) which make up the medina, and "Fès la Jeune" (new town) ) built by the French at the time of the protectorate and where the administrative district is to be found.

In order to get an overall impression, the best thing to do is to go to the heightsoverlooking the city. For this, you will need to take the "Route de Tour de Fès", which branches off from Avenue Hassan II (main street of the new city) and leads to El Kolla hill where the Merinid Necropolis is (Fourteenth Century).

The Medina is not only an historic centre for bazaars and tourists. It is also an important economic centre. Fez is one of the largest cities in the kingdom in economic terms, the second biggest industrial city and furthermore, the majority of its activities are concentrated into the medina.

These consist mainly of art industries. Some specialised areas of this arts and crafts industry that one can mention are woodwork with sculpture and painting on wood, wrought iron, engraved copper, gold and silver work, ceramics, silk weaving and embroidery.

All these crafts are practised in tiny workshops or shops. These craftsmen generally use old-fashioned equipment. Apropos of the ceramics’trade, one observes that in many enamel workshops they no longer take any care in production or the due attention to be paid to the firing process. On the one hand, the pilot workshop method at one time adopted by the administration, has enabled craftsmen to preserve their expertise and improve production, and on the other, the scale of royal orders over the last few decades has led to prosperity in some sectors, particularly in the arts and crafts associated with architectural decoration.

"Nice place for a large group and very close to the Medina"

When we arrived at 4pm, they were still cleaning the floors and we had to ask for the pool to be cleaned before anyone was comfortable in allowing the children to use it. Unlike the reviews on the we… More

Dear client,

Thank you for your review. Please let me clarify the following points :

The riad was ready to welcome you when you arrived. However, it is important to explain that, for your comfort, we clean up the patio twice a day.

We very seriously look after the pool every day in order to keep a clean and clear water.

Regarding food and beverage, it is essential to specify that no food or beverage are included in the riad rental. As a guest house, we offer a bottle of water for 2 and, when lunch or dinner time, a tagine.
You have booked the all riad, which is not the same. All services are duly listed on the website. However, I'm sorry to remind you that we did indeed offer several bottles of water as soon as you arrived ! Please refer to the riad's page, you will see that this is absolutely not included. We are happy to do so though. Moreover, no staff is normally included in the riad rental...

Regarding coffee, it is specified on the menu available in the all riad that Nespresso is charged 3 €. Classical coffee is included. It is important to specify that you refused to pay the espresso, which haven't been charged.

We are very glad to read that you overall enjoyed the riad and it's location. We do all our best to make our clients happy. From our point of view, you cannot honestly make us responsible for services which are not included in the booking, and moreover please consider the fact that we offer services not included.

I do hope to welcome you again and wish you all the best.
Warm smiles
