The Goa region
Candolim, famous for its stretch of clean and beautiful beach, is a verdant, laid-back, coastal village, that typifies the Goan attitude: the ideal place to escape to. Unlike the neighbouring village of Calangute, which is crowded and cluttered with constructions, Candolim has mercifully and fortunately been overlooked. It still retains most of it's old time Goan village charm. Clean, open, uncrowded and very popular with well-informed and knowledgeable tourists who know what's best.
To the North of Candolim is the village of Calangute and the southern end of Candolim houses the Aguada Fort built by the Portuguese.
Candolim is just 15 Kms from the Capital city of Panjim. Drive along the coast line starting from Candolim till the Northernmost tip of Goa and you'll cover all the beaches in the North.
Some interesting facts about Candolim, culled from Wikipedia:
* During the late 16th century, Candolim became the first village in Bardez to be entirely converted to Christianity by the Franciscans
* The Magnificent Church of Our Lady of Good Hope, Candolim, is one of the oldest churches in Goa. Originally built in 1560.
* Candolim is host to the famous annual 'Sunburn' Electronic Music festival.
* One of Candolim's most famous sons 'Abbe Faria', born in Candolim, was a 18th century Goan Roman Catholic monk and a pioneer of the scientific study of hypnotism. He spent several years in the infamous chateau d'If prison in Marseilles, made famous for being one of the settings of Alexandre Dumas' adventure novel 'The Count of Monte Cristo'. Alexander Dumas was so impressed by Abbe Faria that he based his character Faria, who helps Dantes escape, on Abbe Faria.
The area around 'Saudades' is called Ximer - Meaning border in Konkani - and is the northern edge of the Candolim Village closest to the shore and touching the neighboring village of Calangute. Few steps out of the house and you are geographically in the village of Calangute. The location is rustic with old village type houses and friendly villagers. Dotted with trees all around, the place is perfect for a restful holiday. The land behind the 'Saudades' is a wooded area shrouded with trees. A rustic road contributes to a rural, far-away-from-the-madding-crowd ambiance - Another world altogether. Yes, if a vacation is an escape from the grind of daily life, this area is the perfect hideaway. Many Restaurants and a couple of shops are just outside the house. All necessary establishments are within walking distance. The sands of the uncrowded Candolim beach is a one minute walk away. A few minutes' walk along the beach would bring you to the center of the crowded Calangute beach with a whetted appetite and in time for dinner at one of the many restaurants facing the Arabian Sea. After dinner - too dark to walk along the beach - suggest you take a cab back home. If you want to let your hair down and hit the night spots, the neighboring villages of Calangute and Baga will not disappoint.
