There are no cars allowed in the medina, everything is within walking distance. There is parking 5 mins from the house outside the gate at Bab Chabnat.
On arrival you will be met by Rachid, our house manager. He will take you to the house and show you how it all works. He will then take you on a tour of the medina showing places of interest. He has great local knowledge and will advise and help to organise any activities. The house is reguarly cleaned by our lovely housekeeper, Latifa, who is also an excellent cook and will, at an agreed price, cook locally sourced Moroccan food and deliver to the house at the time time of your choice.
About this location
The Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz Region
Essaouira, known then as Mogador, was for centuries a key trading center between Timbuktu and Europe, overseeing flows of manufactured goods streaming south in exchange for African salt, spices, sugar, feathers and gold. In recent years the exchanges have been more cultural in nature: in the 1950's Orson Welles famously shot "Othello" on Essaouira's streets and Skala, while in the 1960s and 70s Essaouira and the pristine beaches just south of town provided haven and inspiration for musicians such as Jimmy Hendrix and Cat Stevens.
Essaouira, the most laid back resort on the Atlantic coast enjoys a mild and pleasant climate all year round. Here you will find a relaxed white washed town with narrow streets and an amazing lively Medina. Unspoilt, white sandy beaches with some of the world’s best windsurfing and a fantastic bustling harbour. You can spend hours in the old medina browsing at the local craftsmen in their workshops, art galleries, shops and boutiques.
There are numerous restaurants and cafes (full details are available in the info book at the house). Down by the harbour you will find the famous fish stalls, which will serve the most amazing fresh fish, caught daily.
The Gnaoua Festival takes place in June every year, its the coming together of Moroccan and World musicians on various stages around the medina and 4 days of gigs and parties.
