Cambodia

Cambodia is most famous for the Angkor complex, home to Angkor Wat, the largest temple in the world. Angkor was the capital of the Khmer empire which lasted from the 9th to 15th centuries. Cambodia is less well-travelled than neighbouring Thailand, but getting popular with tourists. Find your perfect holiday rental in Cambodia with Holiday Lettings.

About Cambodia

There is archaeological evidence to show that people have been in Cambodia since 4,000 BC. By the 1st century BC, Chinese traders were reporting on its existence. The Chinese called the area Funaan, the Khmer kingdom. Much later, Cambodia became a French colony.

The country has a tragic recent history. Over 2 million people died of torture, starvation, disease and execution under the rule of Pol Pot.

Cambodian culture has its roots firmly in Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Cambodians are respectful and polite, greeting each other with the 'Sampeah'. This is a bow, accompanied by the palms of the hands placed together. If someone greets you in this way, you should respond in the same manner.

The cuisine is simple, with rice being a staple. Fish, beef and pork curries are eaten with rice or noodles and Coconut milk. Durian is a popular fruit in Cambodia. Try it—it's very different to western fruits!

What to do in Cambodia

The most famous place to visit in Cambodia, and the most impressive, is Angkor—a UNESCO World Heritage site, and home to Angkor Wat, one of the world’s most iconic temples. It’s a must-see site when on holiday in the country.

Visit the markets and experience the smells from the street food being cooked around you. This Cambodian takeaway food is well worth trying!

Visit memorable Phnom Penh, the capital city, on the Mekong Delta. Take a boat trip along the Mekong River and let your imagination fly. Go to the art deco Central Market, there and enjoy the sights and sounds.

Sample dishes containing the Kampot pepper - native to Cambodia. If you visit Kampot, be sure to go to the Preah Monivong National Park (also known as the Phnom Bokor National Park). Look out for the Durian roundabout with a statue of the popular fruit on it.

There are many sites in Cambodia that are worth visiting, but go before it gets too popular.

Top travel tips for Cambodia

Now that the roads in Cambodia have improved, travelling from A to B by bus is a good travel option. Most bus services begin and end in Phnom Penh. Some smaller villages are not on bus routes, or have limited services.

Minibusses can be used for local trips. So can tuk-tuks - a motorbike in front with a passenger bench behind. These are cheap, but it's a good idea to agree the fare before getting in. Motorbike taxis (motos) can also be found in cities.

If you are in Phnom Penh, organised tours can be booked at travel agents.

If you want to see what Thailand was like twenty years or so ago, visit Cambodia. It is much less developed than its neighbours. It's a cheap tourist destination that is becoming more and more popular. Sample the delicious food and see the sites. Book your holiday rental now with Holiday Lettings and plan the trip of a lifetime!

Old Khmer Wooden House 2Beds & Breakfast
Everything good about visiting Cambodia summed up in one house.

A lovely family run house which is located in a little alleyway in the middle of Siem Reap. We were picked up from the airport by Santana in a tuk tuk and driven directly there which made the transfer even more simple. We were greeted by our hosts Tin Sy and his lovely wife and child. The House is on the first floor and consists of a balcony, living room, bedroom, dressing room and bathroom. it is clean and comfortable and we felt right at home from the minute we took off our shoes and walked up the stairs; nothing was too much trouble, we needed some laundry done as we had been travelling for over a fortnight previously and we wanted to visit the floating village and flooded forests along with the temple complexes of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and some 20 others which we had read about in advance. Santana looked after us for the next 3 days and we saw everything on our itinerary and loads more besides as he is local and was able to take us to smaller gems away from the throngs of tourists which also enhanced the experience. there was a lovely breakfast on the balcony each morning and plenty of cold water and beer in the cold box. We had a wonderful evening meal with some beef Lok Lak and a roasted fish which melted in the mouth. if you are an independent traveller who does not want to stay in an anonymous hotel and would like to experience a little piece of Cambodian life then this is the place for you.
