Everyone visiting York should amble around the City Walls. At more than three kilometres long, the walls are one of the biggest and best-preserved historic monuments in the world.
Parts of the City Walls date all the way back, to Roman times in the 1st century AD. They were taken over by the Danes in the 9th century, but most of the walls were built between the 12th and 14th centuries, making them the longest city walls in England left from the Medieval period.
Around 2.5 million people walk around some or all the walls annually, checking out wonderful views en route. The whole circuit takes around two hours. There are five major main “bars”, or gateways, as well an additional Victorian gateway, a postern (that's a small gateway) and no less than 45 towers.
The walls are open during daylight hours and entrance is free. So why not take a stroll through history with some great views of the city thrown in? The Shambles and York Minster are nearby.
