This Gothic ruin set high upon a headland above the cliffs is the most atmospheric of all Whitby's tourist attractions. Dating all the way back to 615 AD, its dramatic history matches its dramatic setting. Destroyed by the Vikings in 867 AD then rebuilt by the Normans in the late 11th century, it was finally dissolved by Henry VIII.
However the Abbeys haunting beauty continued to inspire and achieved fame by inspiring Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula. Its easy for visitors to see how the ruins inspired Stoker as the Abbey is steeped in legend. It was said that after her death, the first Abbess, St Hilda, made regular appearances at the highest point of the Abbeys north side.
There are amazing views of Whitby from inside the ruins and the green space around the ruins is a good spot to take a picnic. The visitor centre provides extensive information on the Abbey through a series of interactive displays and also has a great gift shop. Back in the town, other attractions await you including Whitby Harbour and the Captain Cook Memorial Museum.
