For Venice sightseeing the Grand Canal is the way to go. It snakes through Venice from the lagoon near Santa Lucia station to St Marks Basin. Its nearly four kilometres long and is lined with fabulous 13th to 18th century architecture. Venice has created its own variants of major architectural styles, so look out for examples of Venetian Gothic or Venetian Baroque.
You can admire the palazzos, built to show off the Venetians wealth, as well as the fondaco houses. The latter combine wealthy merchants' residences with warehouses and have pretty porticos where boats can dock.
Dont miss the beautiful Rialto Bridge. It was the only major bridge in Venice until the 19th century - just three more have been built since. If you need to cross the Canal, board a traghetto and stand up for the ride. You could pay for the luxury of a gondola ride along the Grand Canal. For a cheaper option try the vaporetto (waterbus), though do avoid rush hour. Or take one of the recommended motorboat tours. Finish at the Palazzo Ducale and Piazza San Marco.
