“Friendly, warm, accommodation and magnificent scenery” We had a fantastic weekend staying at Michael and Nery's cottage. We were made to feel welcome and Michael kept the fire well stocked for us so that we were nice and warm. We loved the fact the accommodation is pet friendly and our 4 legged companion got to join us there. Michael and Nery even took him for a walk! Couldn't have asked for more. The cottage is lovely and cosy and the jacuzzi at the foot of the garden is just what u need after a day on the slopes. Can't wait to visit again! We have already recommend the accommodation to friends.

“A Home away From Home!” For our vacation in NZ, we were searching for places to stay that would provide us a good home base where we could be largely self-supported, by cooking our own meals and having more privacy than a hotel. What we got at Mapua Heights was that and much more! The cottage itself was spectacular, with a gorgeous view looking over the Nelson area (amazing sunrises and sunsets!). In fact, it was such a nice, homey place to stay that we occasionally had trouble justifying going out and seeing the sights. Luckily, our wonderful hosts who lived nearby, Ken and Vivien, provided all the information and suggestions for the entire area, and helped us plan our great trip out and about. With Ken and Vivien's hospitality, we felt very much at home, as we would with a pair of good neighbors not too far away! The part that stood out the most was that our hosts allowed us to see what their lives were like as much as we wanted. Ken and Vivien were gracious enough to show us what animals they have on their property and use their kayaks in the nearby inlet. We got to help them sheer their sheep, feed their deer, tour their awesome glowworm colony, and learn about the honey harvested from their bee colonies. I highly recommend Mapua Heights Cottage for those looking to get a more intimate experience with the Nelson area than most hotels and lodges can provide. There were no downsides, and we won't do it any differently when we (hopefully) return one day. Thanks Ken and Vivien!

“Fantastic relaxing stay” Our family of 4 (2 young kids) had a fantastic stay at Karaka Cottage. It was a welcome relief from a week of campervaning. Elspeth was extremely accomodating with any request without being obtrusive. The cottage is in a wonderful quiet location and the hammock and outdoor bath were absolute winners for adults and kids alike! The cottage is not far from Mapua with all of the cafes and restaurants that it has to offer. Highly recommended.

“Eco friendly, warm and helpful hosts, outstanding location and v” We, a family of two parents and two college aged kids, stayed in the cottage in mid September, 2012. We arrived after having been rained on at the glaciers. ..and had wet clothes. Gina and Martin offered to let us use their dryer . ..(there is a washer in the cottage), and ended up drying and folding our clothes! This was above and beyond. The house was designed for maximum ecologically benefit. The heater is wood fired. . .but we were perfectly warm, although stormy outside. We appreciated the Vanners leaving tons of information and brochures about everything, from hiking, to eating. Also, they looked up things for us and gave recommendations that helped tremendously. The cottage is truly private ..but we were always treated well when we went to the "neighbors" to get info or to talk. We would have loved to stay longer. Martin-the crossing was not as bad as predicted. .but thanks so much for the heads-up on the storm warnings! Would definitely stay again.

“A restful and idylic retreat” I received excellent service with a beautifully appointed bach, privacy and views to die for. Being there in the winter was amazing - the early morning sunrise was spectacular and the open fire for the evenings perfect. The early morning chorus was something else - all the birds around the bach and on the estuary were amazing. I loved my stay - the absolute privacy and the idylic setting made it a visit to remember.

“Fabulous cottage, great views, and wonderful hosts!” We had an initial worry about connecting with the hosts but in a short time Jessie arrived and let us in. She had been on a trip with the Department of Conservation and even gave us some blue cod they caught for our dinner. The apartment is great, nice kitchen and shower, very comfortable bed and even laundry facilities. The one slight drawback was the difficulty of connecting to the internet, which one could only do in one place and that intermittently. However we found this to be true in most of our places we stayed in NZ, probably because it is all so mountainous and underpopulated. Nonetheless a really gorgeous country, friendly people, and excellent trip over all.
