The magnificent Botanical Gardens is one of the most popular places to visit in Sheffield. The gardens opened in 1836 as a wonderful Victorian institution. Theyre free to visit. Recently theyve been fully restored and renovated at a cost of £7 million.
The grounds extend to 19 acres, containing 15 different garden areas with more than 5,000 species of plants. They include plant collections from all over the world. Some of these are official scientific collections of individual species, acting as gene pools for conservation. The glass pavilions and hot-houses are spectacular and some of the earliest ever built.
Theres also an open-air theatre in the gardens, which competes with the nearby famous Lyceum and Crucible theatres. Numerous arts events take place here and there are also regular plant sales. If you're in Sheffield during December come and see the Christmas illuminations at the gardens.
