Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano is the oldest of the four major basilicas in Rome. It was once at the apex of Christendom. Until the late 14th century it was the Popes main place of worship and it remains Romes official cathedral. For this reason alone it's one of the most important things to see in Rome.
Before entering, you can marvel at the bold white facade and the ancient bronze doors. They were taken from the Curia on the Roman forum. Once inside, you will witness a magnificent gilt ceiling and an ornate 15th-century mosaic floor. Not to mention the vast central nave holding immense statues of the apostles.
The interior has undergone many a makeover. Much of what we can see today is thanks to the renowned architect Francesco Borromini, who revamped it for the 1650 Jubilee. While Borromini's design provides a more modern look, many historic fittings are still in place. Notable among them is an exquisite fourteenth-century fresco of Pope Boniface VIII. Other major nearby attractions are the Colosseum and Basilica San Paolo.
