The Dalmatia region

The Dubrovacko-Neretvanska županija ( county ) is one of the wealthiest regions in Croatia. But first of all is wealth with its nature, and architecture as well as tourism. Its spread from Korcula to Dubrovnik and surrounded by the beautiful blue sea, green trees and hills. The prosperity of the city of Dubrovnik was historically based on maritime trade. As the capital of the Republic of Ragusa, a maritime republic, the city achieved a high level of development, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries. Dubrovnik became notable for its wealth and skilled diplomacy. The annual Dubrovnik Summer Festival is a 45 day-long cultural event with live plays, concerts, and games. Dubrovnik has an international airport of its own. It is located approximately 20 km (12 mi) from Dubrovnik city centre, near ?ilipi. Buses connect the airport with the Dubrovnik old main bus station in Gruž. In addition, a network of modern, local buses connects all Dubrovnik neighbourhoods running frequently from dawn to midnight. However, Dubrovnik, unlike Croatia's other major centres, is not accessible by rail. The island of Korcula has an area of 279 km2 (108 sq mi); 46.8 km (29.1 mi) long and on average 7.8 km (4.8 mi) wide. Main settlements on the island are towns of Korcula, Vela Luka and Blato. Villages on the coast are Brna, Lumbarda, Ra?iš?e, Zavalatica, Prižba and Prigradica, while Žrnovo, Pupnat, Smokvica and ?ara are placed inland. The main road runs along the spine of the island connecting all settlements from Lumbarda on the eastern to Vela Luka on the western end, with the exception of Raciscee, which is served by a separate road running along the northern coast. Ferries connect the city of Korcula with Orebic on the Pelješac peninsula and Drvenik on the mainland (near Makarska). Another line connects Vela Luka with Split and the island of Lastovo. Fast passenger catamarans connect those two ports with Split and the islands of Hvar and Lastovo. The main Adriatic ferry line connects Korcula with Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar and Rijeka and in summer there are direct ferries to Italian Adriatic ports. The economy, besides tourism, is based on agriculture, namely the cultivation of grape vines, olives and fruit, and fishing and fish processing. Shipbuilding still exists although its importance to the local economy has diminished. Summer tourism has a long tradition on the island. Nautical and village agro-tourism have recently been developed.
