The Province of Munster region

Youghal is a coastal heritage town scenically situated at the mouth of the River Blackwater. The name pronounced “Yawl” derives from the Irish “Eochaill” meaning “Yew Wood.” The medieval town walls can be traced to the mid 13th century. Built by the Fitzgeralds in 1220, Youghal has an interesting historical past. Relive this colourful past by following the Youghal Heritage Trail. An iconic landmark in the heart of Youghal is the Clockgate Tower which dates from 1777 and was used as a gaol until the mid 19th century. Get an insight into Youghal's past at the Youghal Heritage Centre. St. Mary's Collegiate Church is a national monument and interestingly the present edifice dates from 1220. History comes to life at Fox's Lane museum with a display of restored domestic gadgets from the 1850s – 1950s including laundry equipment, the Edison Phonograph, early gramophones and much more. Fun for all awaits at family friendly Youghal. This coastal resort boasts 3 blue flag beaches where you can walk, swim, surf or simply relax. Explore the wonders of the sea with a diving expedition, deep sea angling or whale and dolphin watching trip. Tee off at Youghal's scenically located golf course. Given its strategic coastal location and strong maritime heritage, it is not surprising that Youghal was the chosen in 1954 as the location for the John Huston directed film “Moby Dick.” Sir Walter Raleigh who lived in Youghal for periods during the 16th century is thought to have planted the first potatoes in Ireland at his residence at Myrtle Grove in Youghal. This is significant given that potatoes remain synonymous with Irish cuisine. Experience the thrill and excitement of a night at the dogs at Youghal Greyhound Stadium or enjoy an evening of Irish traditional music, dance, storytelling and song. Fun galore is to be had at the funfair and entertainment centre in the town. Highlights of the town's calendar include the Queen of the Sea Festival, Youghal Medieval Day, Youghal Celebrates History and the Youghal Maritime Festival

Youghal is ideally situatued for exploring both Cork and Waterford with Ardmore and Lismore a short drive away. Visitors will be spoilt for choice with magnificent beaches 10 minutes away. Fota Wildlife Park is a 30 minute drive and is a fantastic day out for both young and old alike.
