Description from owner

Description

A Forest of Dean cottage, called The Old Chapel, is situated up a small lane, right next to woodland with wonderful walks right on the doorstep. As one of our guests succinctly put it 'we came away for a break and could not have found a nicer place'. The chapel has been sympathetically converted retaining much of its original character and charm. There is lots of pine cladding on both walls and ceilings which gives a wonderful feeling of warmth and relaxation. The floors are original oak. Candles in the evening and a beast of a wood burning fire make this an incredibly relaxing place to be. Bliss! Sitting on the sofa by the fire all you can see is a wonderful forest view... no houses!

Most of the accommodation is on the ground floor, including a large through lounge and dining room with 14 foot high ceilings giving a feeling of space, along with a double bedroom, a small but well equipped kitchen, a large utility room and a bathroom. Upstairs is another double bedroom on a mezzanine overlooking the lounge.

The Old Chapel exudes a feeling of peace, calm and tranquility; a place where you can get in touch with your soul.

Further details

Welcome tea tray is provided on arrival.

The kitchen is very well equipped as I enjoy cooking.

We have decorated the cottage to give it a 'home from home' feel as I remember a couple of holiday places we stayed at that had absolutely no character whatsoever which I found really depressing.

Further details indoors

The cottage has very high ceilings with lots of pine cladding and mainly original wooden floors. The lounge/diner measures approx 31feet x 18 feet and the high ceilings make it look spacious. There is a 42 inch flat screen TV in the lounge, plus a DVD player and about 40 DVDs (three-quarters of which are suitable for adults and one quarter for children). There are 2 bedrooms with a double bed in each; (one bedroom is on the ground floor and the other is a galleried bedroom with an apex ceiling and wooden beams). There is a fully equipped bathroom with walk-in shower enclosure, wash-hand basin, bath, toilet and bidet, plus a fully equipped kitchen and utility area.

Picnic chairs are kept in the understairs cupboard should you wish to take them out on day trips.

Further details outdoors

The small courtyard garden has a table and chairs for 4 people. There are also 2 'La Fuma' style recliner style chairs for relaxing. The garden is lit, so it is possible to read in the garden during the evening in the summer months.

The garden is small but there is a forest just on the doorstep.

Sheep regularly come up our lane and the mostly nocturnal boar can be seen on occasions if you are lucky.

Interaction with guest

I usually respond quickly to all enquiries. I hate being kept hanging around and don't expect others to have to. We live in London so will not be there on arrival but there is a key safe at the back door so time of arrival is never an issue. I was brought up in the Forest of Dean until the age of 18 and we go back there regularly. We live near Heathrow so the quiet in the forest is very appealing!!! My manager lives in the village should any help be needed when I am not able to access wi-fi (which I have to say is very rare). I like to tie up all the booking formalities as soon as. I am happy to give advice about the cottage or its environs at any time. I know them both well! I am a people person and am known to be very friendly

“Great location”

Reviewed 3 Aug 2013

Our second year visiting the Old Chapel, it is perfectly situated for us walkers and cyclists, up a lane into the forest, has everything and more that a family could need whilst on holiday, home from home; this time we didn't use the log burner as we were so lucky with blue skies and sunny days, loved sitting outside with cool drinks in the peace and tranquility after busy days. Perfect area to venture further for visiting Ross, Symonds Yat, and many local beautiful attractions. We have recommended and one set of friends has been to stay with more going in November, we hope to make another visit before the end of this year as I have the withdrawal symptoms from being away from the forest, yearning to be back there. Thanks again to Doreen.

“Loved it and can't wait to return.”

Reviewed 26 Jul 2012

The converted Chapel is beautifully transformed into a wonderful home in a delightful setting and the owners have thought of simply everything you could possibly wish for and need. We returned home last Saturday having enjoyed our best ever week in the Forest which is a huge compliment as we have been going every year for about 22 years. We came this time with our daughter and her fiance and walked and cycled around 70 plus miles all from the Chapel, the weather although slightly inclement did not dampen our stay and in fact gave us the excuse to light the fabulous log burner and light a few candles whilst enjoying evenings in after cooking with a good bottle of wine snuggled up on the three lovely squiggy sofas reading or watching films on the big flat screen TV, so cosy and homely, neighbours were very friendly and all in all I can say I would move there tomorrow. I hope Doreen continues to let the Chapel as this has now become our firm favourite.

“A place to rest, recharge and relax”

Reviewed 2 Oct 2011

I was expecting something a bit unusual (how does one convert a Chapel into a dwelling...) and I wasn't disappointed, the Old Chapel has lots of charm and quirkiness and at the same time it is very modern, and clean. Lots of attention to details, I particularly liked an enormous folder full of useful information, second best must be the cast iron open stove to curl up in front and third to sleep on the mezzanine floor. We wish we'd gone later in autumn, the forest must be awesome when the leaves change colours but all the same it is a magical place. If I had to suggest one thing to do I would say an half day trip to Symonds Yat Rock + one of the walks along the river Wye, unforgettable very dramatic scenery. Thank you guys for a perfect long weekend
