The Yorkshire region

The City of York lies at the very heart of Yorkshire once England’s largest county with the most geographically diverse landscape in all of England. From wild windswept crags and moors, high coastal chalk cliff tops to long sandy beaches, beautifully wooded dales and National Forests & Parks.

The stately home of Castle Howard is just north of York, often described as one of the grandest private residences in Britain, still home to the family of Catherine Howard, the second of Henry Vlll's wives. As well as being open to the public most times of the year, holds its own classical music festivals in its magnificent grounds.

A little further away, 45 miles to the east of York, an hour by car, are the seaside towns of Scarborough, Bridlington or if a quieter old world charm is preferred, to the north east across the North Yorkshire Moors lay the wonderfully peaceful coastal fishing villages of Runswick Bay, Staithes and Robin Hoods Bay neatly nestled beneath high towering cliffs.

Along the same section of coast is the old whaling town of Whitby, home of Captain Cook and where two of his ships the Endeavour and Resolution were built. Whitby sits on the estuary of the river Esk and is dominated by the cliff top remains of its 7th century Abbey and nearby St Mary's Church and seafarers’ graveyard dating back to the 1100's. Walking around these gravestones beneath the Gothic ruin it’s not surprising that this is where the story of Dracula begins and was originally penned.

Approximately 25 miles to the west of York are the market towns of Harrogate and Skipton gateway to the Yorkshire Dales and Bronte country. Skipton lies at the centre of the19th century industrial revolutions navigation canal system, where visitors can take a river trip on some of the well preserved and beautifully painted canal boats.

There are also steam railways, heritage trails and even deep underground limestone cave systems to visit. For the literary minded, visit Howarth, 800 ft up in the Pennines where the Parsonage home of Emily and Charlotte Bronte is located and is open to the public most times of the year.

Yorkshire possesses a multitude of picturesque towns and villages, medieval castles, battlefields as well as grand stately homes to visit and the City of York is and excellent city to choose as a base to explore this very diverse county.

York Riverside

The City of York is steeped in England’s history, once England’s northern capital, was founded on the banks of the river Ouse, 71 AD by the IX Legion of the Roman Empire as a fortified military base. In AD 306 Constantine was declared Emperor of all of Rome here, then the city was known as Eboracum - which means the place where Yew trees grow.

Later visitors include the Vikings who crossed the North Sea in their longships, c.866 AD, and sailed up the river Ouse to a triangular piece of land where the Ouse is joined by the river Foss. Here they settled and named the place Jorvik. Now known as Coppergate it is one of the most significant Viking excavations sites outside of Scandinavia, over 800 items on display at the world famous Jorvik Viking centre where visitors can take a journey back in time to view life as it once was around 900 AD in Viking York.

William the Conqueror arrived in 1069 AD three years after the defeat of the Saxon King Harold at the Battle of Hastings. The Normans built a wooden motte-and-bailey castle. Around 200 years later the castle was rebuilt in stone and the entire city was walled with four magnificent Gatehouses that still stand today. The remains of the 13th century castle bailey wall and entrance gate where the castles flour mills once stood can be seen from the apartment.

During the English Civil war Royalist troops garrisoned the city against the besieging parliamentarians before marching out to be resoundingly defeated by Oliver Cromwell’s Roundhead army at the battle of Marston Moor 1644.

And in1738 the most famous Highwayman of all, John Palmer, alias Dick Turpin, spent his last night in the condemned cell at York Castle before facing the gallows at York’s Tyburn. He lies buried a few minutes walk from the apartment.

Exciting reminders of these and other occupiers of this great city can still be seen today to make York one of England’s top tourist destinations. As the late King George the Vl once said, 'York IS the history of England'

Things to do; Visit York's major historic attractions; York Minster, Clifford’s Tower, Railway Museum - home to the Flying Scotsman, Castle Museum with its Victorian Streets and old fashioned sweet shops or take a trip back in time at the Jorvic Viking centre are all within easy walking distance from the apartment (approx 6 -8 minutes)

History walks, Riverside walks, boat trips, a quiet stroll around the city walls - York has more miles of intact city walls than any other town or city in England, with some sections of the walls dating back to Roman times. Or take a relaxed ride through the ancient streets in a horse & carriage or open top bus guided tour ride around the city, access to all these literally just minutes away from the front door.

High Street designer or Market shopping as well as shops in the medieval streets of Stonegate or cobbled Shambles are only 10 minutes walk from the apartment.

Evening attractions; dine at one of the many fine restaurants’ close by. All within easy walking distance and all offer a diverse array of cuisine from exotic Asian or Arabic to Italian or Mexican, or enjoy a quiet sundowner or traditional fare at one of the riverside Bistro's or ‘Ye Olde English’ riverside pubs. For night owls there are spooky Ghost walks or visit the Theatre, or see whats on at the Opera House and of course there are Nightclubs too.

Events / festivals; The York Mystery plays - held every four years in the ruins of St Mary's Abbey; The Viking Festival, Ebor Race Week and much more.

There is lots to do all year round, indeed visit; York's official web site, or for further details on what’s going on in this great magical city.

"Very comfortable and convenient for a city visit"

Spent an excellent week in the apartment. Accommodation was clean, warm, comfortable and ideal for exploring the city of York. Access was easy and the owner's directions and local advice were very helpful. York is a beautiful city and this apartment is an ideal venue to explore every part of it.

"Fantastic place to stay in central York"

We had a lovely week in this apartment in York. It's a great location, just a short walk from everything in the city centre, the city walls. Extremely easy to find, with good directions provided by the owner. Handy parking space, although we hardly used the car during our stay as everything was so central. The apartment is very well equipped - everything we needed was in the kitchen and it has obviously been a holiday let for a while as there were plenty of helpful leaflets, brochures and maps to help us plan our visit. Nice to have wi-fi access there as well - we found the radio and TV technology more than ample for our needs. The decor is fun - definitely not that ubiquitous beige you find in most holiday flats, so a welcome relief! Other things we appreciated (and which we've had problems with in other holiday flats) was good lighting in both bedroom and living room.
