The Turkish Aegean Coast region
The area, described as the St. Tropez of the Aegean, benefits from a beautiful year round climate and is comprised of busy market towns, typical fishing villages and stunning scenery, sandy beaches and tasty local cuisine. The whole area is steeped in history, with many ancient sites to visit just a stones throw away. Within Bodrum itself you will find over 5000 years of history right on your doorstep including the Halicarnassus Mausoleum, one of the wonders of the Ancient World.
The Mausoleum is Bodrums' oldest antiquity, and was built by Artemisia II in honour of her husband King Mausolos. It was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and Mausolus's name is now associated with all stately tombs through our modern word Mausoleum.
The ancient Amphi-theatre is another witness to the rich history of Bodrum. Perched on the hillside overlooking Bodrum this ancient marvel was built between 330-30 BC.
The castle of St Peter is now one of the finest museums in the region. The castle dates back to the knights of St John, and served as the sole refuge of Christains on the West Coast during the crusades.
This picture postcard resort has a cosmopolitan atmosphere and a vibrant nightlife with sophisticated and atmospheric entertainment. The area has an all -year- round Mediterranean climate, with long Summers from April to October and Warm, short winters.
The busy town of Bodrum, with its spectacular water front castle, is a hive of activity with many market stalls and friendly locals. The local restaurants and bars are excellent and reasonably priced. Bodrum is famous for its leather goods, glass beads, carpets and natural sponges. Once a year Bodrum flexes its musical muscle and hosts the month long International Gumusluk Clasical Musical Festival in summer and attracts world famous classical performers. For a true taste of Turkey there is the week long Aegean Festival at Yalikavak Marina dedicated to all treats Turkish.
The beaches in the area are fabulous with golden sands and azure seas. The nearest beach Yalikavak is just 3km away and here you will find a selection of quality hotels who will allow non-residents to use their facilities. The restaurents in this area are to equal any of the top ones in London but at a fraction of the price.
You will find a wide range of activities to enjoy in the area which include: Diving courses, river rafting, parasailing, snorkeling, jet skis, aqua parks, horse riding, and jeep safaris to name but a few. If you are feeling even more adventurous you could try your hand at paragliding, hot air ballooning and mountaineering.
Your nearest golf course is a mere 20 minutes drive away (Vita Park) and boasts an international championship course.
If that all sounds a little strenuous you can take a village tour and discover the less seen but no less beautiful side of Turkey. Here life is tranquil and moves at a slower pace than the more touristy areas. Your tour will include Lunch, Local drinks, professional tour guide, transportation, Sight seeing and a Turkish Coffee house.
Or visit the Greek island of Kos, which is just 20 minutes away if you travel by Hydrofoil. Oh, and don't forget to treat yourself to a Turkish Bath, you'll find yourself going back for more.
