Location description from owner

The Island of Gozo region

The Island of Gozo is part of the Maltese archipelago, situated right in the heart of the Mediterranean; at the crossroads of east and west and north and south. Sicily is 60 km to the north, Africa is just over 200km to the south and the islands are equidistant between the entrance to the Suez Canal in the east and Gibralter to the west. Malta and Gozo truly represent the melting pot of Mediterranean Culture, which in-turn has been influenced by centuries of invasions and foreign rule. For the history and culture buff to the sun-worshipper, the islands have something to offer for everyone who wants either an action-packed or a relaxing holiday, or a mixture of both.

Gozo is Malta's little sister, but much more chilled-out and smaller, being only 14 km in length and 7.25 km wide. Getting from A to B is straightforward by hire-car, local bus routes, by bicycle (available to hire at the B&B) or on foot. Visitors arrive on Gozo at the port of Mgarr via an efficient, 24-hour ferry service from the port of Cirkewwa in the north of Malta (50 minutes drive from Malta International Airport).

In the Summer months (June, July, August, September) Gozo is hot, dry and sunny; perfect for swimming, snorkelling, boating and diving. Gozo is a top dive destination with some of the best shore dives in the world in its crystal clear waters; dive centres abound in the main resorts of Xlendi and Marsalforn. Summer evenings lend themselves perfectly to enjoying dinner at the water's edge in restaurants serving local produce especially fish, seafood and glorious locally-grown vegetables; the local wine is winning awards so be sure to sample some during your holiday. March, April, May, October, November and December can have some fantastically sunny days, interspersed with some showers which ensures that the land looks like a green carpet strewn with colourful wild flowers growing across the island. These months are ideal for walking, cycling and taking in centuries of history such as The Ggantija Temples, The Citadel in the capital, Victoria, museums, sleepy hilltop villages with their quaint cafes, winding streets and churches and sampling local, seasonal produce such as capers, sundried tomatoes, olive oil and gbeniet (cheese).

Christmas sees Gozo resplendent with churches lit up after dark and band processions; a recent addition to Christmas in Gozo is "Bethlehem in Ghajnsielem" which is a "village" built to replicate the place of Jesus' birth, complete with actors recreating the Nativity whilst visitors can enjoy mulled wine. Carnival is celebrated prior to Lent (usually in February), with major tableaux and floats in Victoria. The village of Nadur's raucous Carnival celebrations have captured media attention worldwide with people flocking here from all over the world to take part in a week of fun and partying that goes on through the night. Easter sees processions in each village, which are well-worth a visit and throughout Summer each village has a week-long Festa (feast) in honour of the village Saint; although religious in nature, these feats tend to be an excuse for a big party!

Xaghra

St. Agnes B&B is set in the hilltop village of Xaghra with it's typically Gozitan architecture, old farm houses, fields, country lanes and a bustling village square where there are plenty of restaurants to suit every pocket, cafes, bars, shops and hawkers selling fresh fish, fruit and vegetables. In the heart of Gozo's farming community, local restaurants make the most of this by utilising fantasic fresh local ingredients and menus' specials change according to whatever is in season; foodie heaven!

Xaghra is situated in the north of the island, and is home to what's considered the best beach throughout the Maltese Islands: Ramla Bay (or Ramla il-Hamra). Accessible buy bus, about 20 minutes' walk or a 5 minute drive from the village-core, Ramla Bay has a wide, red-sand beach and the clear Mediterranean sea laps the shore making it ideal for paddling, swimming, sunbathing and snorkelling. There is a handful of beach-bars offering drinks, snacks and full-on delicious meals throughout the warmer months, as well as sunbeds and umbrellas for the serious sun-worshipper. The popular seaside resort of Marsalforn is around 2km away, and in Spring, Marsalforn wakes from its Winter slumber and cafes, pizzerias, bars, ice-cream parlours and restaurants throw open their doors onto the bustling promenade to welcome tourists and locals alike. There are several live music venues and nightclubs for the young and not so young! Along the coast, just a short walk from Marsalforn is the hamlet of Qbajjar; a great place to take a dip in the sea followed by a cool drink in one of the locally-run cafes dotted along the water's edge.

The Ggantija Temple complex in Xaghra is one of the oldest free-standing structures on our planet, pre-dating even The Pyramids, and there are also several other archaeologically or geologically significant sites in the village itself, such as the Brockdorff Stone Circle, Xerri's Cave and Ninu's Cave. High on the cliff overlooking Ramla Bay is a cave - Calypso's Cave; this is said to be where Homer's Odysseus was mesmerised by the Nymph Calypso and, according to the famous legend, the cave is where he stayed for seven years after being shipwrecked on the shores of the island known as Ogygia, presumably the island we know today as Gozo.
