The Western Cape region
The Western Cape is much more than just about Cape Town. A short distance across the Cape Flats (themselves of great interest with wetlands and wonderful birdlife) lie further mountain ranges even more beautiful than Table Mountain and in some ways even more striking. The area is dotted with historically interesting towns, often unspoiled and many of them have great restaurants serving the local wines.
There are wonderful day-trips to be done and sights to be seen. Visit the various wine farms, the fishing villages on the West Coast, see Eve's footprint (the oldest footprint ever found of an anatomically modern human - at 117 000 years old this comes from the dawn of our modern species), explore the mountain passes - the list is endless.
Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities on earth, with Table Mountain towering over its beaches. It is also a very cosmopolitan city. It has wonderful restaurants of all descriptions. The Kistenbosch Botanical Gardens are world famous - there are more species of plants on the Cape Peninsula than in the whole of the UK!. The Waterfront is more than comparable to that in San Francisco and is also a working harbour. There are many small but high quality musems.
You can walk up Table Mountain or take the Cable Car and hike down. There are miles and miles of beaches some with warm water some with cold, there are fishing harbours such as Kalk Bay where you can buy fish straight from the boat, there is excellent surfing. You can tour the townships and see the local crafts.
You could spend a month here and do something different each day.
There are restuarants and pubs within walking distance of the cottage.
The friendly owners of Coote's Cottage (John & Colleen) live about 15 minutes drive away on a horse farm in the Philippi wetlands and you will always be welcome to come and visit and have a chat and a cup of coffee or tea. If you do not know Cape Town and would like some advice on what to do we will always be prepared to assist and advise.
