Description

Detached country cottage located just 3 miles outside of the historic market town of Alnwick. The cottage is at the end of a private country lane and boasts complete peace and quiet. The Granary Overthwarts faces south and enjoys uninterrupted views of the Edlingham Valley, back dropped by the magnificent Cheviot hills.

The cottage is ideal for dog walkers, cyclists and families. Directly outside the front door is a public footpath that links to a whole network of other paths providing great walking. Follow the path down the hill, to find a small stream with footbridge over it leading to the ruins of Edlingham Castle and disused railway line and viaduct.

A private walled garden with lawned area, flower border and picnic table allows anyone visiting the cottage the ability to relax and take in the breathtaking views and stunning rural countryside.

Although The Granary is located in beautiful rural countryside, it is still just 12 miles from the sea.

Location description from owner

The England region

Northumberland is the northern most county in England before entering Scotland. Northumberland boasts more castles than any other county in England, the most famous being Alnwick Castle - home to Harry Hotspur, Duke of Northumberland and Harry Potter!

Holy Island or Lindisfarne is also within travelling distance of the cottage although it is cut off by the tide for 8 hours each day so its a good idea to take a picnic incase you do get trapped on the Island. In which case, you must go exploring the beaches and coves to the north of the island.

A must, is a boat tour to the Farne Islands followed by fish and chips at Seahouse. Choose the time of year carefully, as a visit during the nesting season means you'll need to wear a hat to avoid being attached by the protective birds. (they don't hurt and it is a lot of fun in actual fact!).

Although, if you are after quiet white sandy beaches, the Coast is just 12 miles from the The Granary Overthwarts. My cousins tell me it has some of the best surf around although I'll have to take their word for that.

Northern England

A little closer to The Granary Overthwarts is Cragside House and gardens. Cragside was the first house to be lit be hydroelectricty. It was such a spectactle that the railway was specially built to bring Queen Victoria for a royal visit. This is a great day out and is only 3 miles from the Granary in the rural village of Rothbury.

If this is still a little too far to travel, you could open the door, walk down the field past Owl woods to the ruins of Edlingham Castle and the spectaular rail viaduct with its many arches.

For anyone who likes walking there are two very special walks in Northumberland - one is to Blawearie at Old Bewick, the remote ruins of a crofting family set in the wonderfully wild Northumberland landscape. The other walk is a visit to the Drake Stone at Harbottle (believe to be a Dragons Tooth!)

Here's a little secret too that no one else really knows about. If you're looking for the most amazing place to get married, then why not book Brinkburn Priory. It's not far from The Granary and from the outside, it looks like a small church, but on the inside it's a full priory. Have a look at the pictures on our facebook page www.facebook.com/overthwarts

“Needs some TLC”

Reviewed 13 Nov 2016

The views from the cottage were beautiful and the cottage was well equipped. However we did have some issues and problems when we arrived on the Saturday * no hot water * heating not working properly, radiators in bathrooms and lounge cold. * cleanliness issues.. greasy cooker hob, dirt in bath, kitchen surfaces not thoroughly wiped. *no WiFi (previous reviewers also had problems with this) *safety issues particularly in family bathroom. No handrails to help get out of shower or rubber mat. We purchased one on the Sunday and were reimbursed. * outside lights not working or working torch provided * No written instructions anywhere .... * No evidence of any electrical items having been PAT tested. We used the emergency number given and the owners mother who lived locally arranged for a plumber and electrician to come. We had hot water on Monday evening and were told it was likely there was a leak in system and were shown how to adjust pressure if needed. We discovered the leak at bed time as the radiator in the en-suite had rusted through so needed a bowl under it. The radiator was removed the next day but not replaced The other bathroom radiator did not work at all whilst we were there so neither bathroom was a pleasant experience. The description on the letting website says the cottage is pet friendly but it is not made clear that they have to stay in the kitchen. I did enquire about the garden as it's not attached to the house but is across the track. Dogs cannot be allowed to wander across as I was assured as there were cows in the field with a damaged gate which dogs could easily climb through. The owners mother was very apologetic and did her best to sort the problems out. As previous reviews have stated the house really needs a deep clean and a bit of TLC as it is in a lovely part of the country.

I'm so sorry you had so many problems. I have passed your comments about the cleanliness onto Mollymaid, the cleaners. I understand all other items were resolved whilst you were there - it's just a shame they all happened at once during your stay. Thanks for the bath mat - we used to have one but precious guests threw it away as the bath has grab handles.

“Amazing holiday in a gorgeous setting”

Reviewed 29 Aug 2016

Had a fantastic holiday at Overthwarts, the cottage is spacious, bright, airy and in a tranquill and beautiful area, 10 minute drive to Alnwick and the A1 which takes you to all that Northumberland has too offer, we love this area and come up every year and we are so happy to have found The Granery, we will definitely be back next year

Thank you for your lovely review. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

“Tranquil location”

Reviewed 19 Jan 2014

Stayed here for 2 nights as a treat for my wife's birthday and it was just the ticket for a much needed break from work pressures. As usual, the weather was pretty rubbish for most of the stay, so we decided not to drag the kids out for what would've been I'm sure, a fabulous location to explore the beautiful surrounding countryside, we weren't worried though, as the cottage is well stocked with games, DVD's, and a good selection of books. Once we had warmed the cottage up, it was lovely and cosy...perfect for what we wanted. My only real gripe would be the showers aren't powerful, something I like, to wake me up in the morning!

Thanks for your review. We have had a few comments about the showers. I'm afraid we just don't get the powerful showers that you can get in the towns. I have however asked my local plumber to have a look and see if we can instal a power shower or similar ready for next year. I will let you know when it's in!

“Wonderful stay at The Granary”

Reviewed 15 Sep 2013

We have had a truly wonderful week at The Granary Overthwarts, the cottage itself is beautiful, well presented and decorated with a personal charm that instantly makes you feel at home. The kitchen is lovely to cook in with a full selection of cooking utensils and large range of recipe books catering for every taste. The living area is very comfortable, with two sofas to relax on and a large, eclectic selection of books to read or for the more cinematically orientated a choice of DVDs to watch. The Bedrooms, particularly the super kingsized bed are very very comfortable, there is ample wardrobe space in all the three rooms, and a en suite bathroom in the master bedroom. The location of The Granary is spectacular, surrounded by lush green fields and hills, it is however conveniently within a 5-10 minute drive to the centre of Alnwick, which is a moderate sized and very pretty town. There is a fairly large supermarket to get all the essentials and quite a number of restaurants, we particularly liked The Plough, eating there on two occasions. We visited Beadnell Beach several times, which is a lovely and very large sandy beach. We also had a boat trip out to see the Seal colony on the Farne islands. There are plenty of activities and days out in and around Alnwick which we were pleasantly surprised to find, however the stunning coastline is well worth a visit alone. We will definitely be back to stay at The Granary Overthwarts, and would recommend a visit to anyone

“Ideal for family holiday”

Reviewed 12 Aug 2013

The cottage is in beautiful surroundings but not too far from the main town. It is well equiped especially with dishes etc as we did quite a bit of cooking! Plenty of DVDs to watch for all ages!

Thanks for your review. I'm delighted you enjoyed your stay at The Granary and welcome any suggestions to improve the cottage and service. Hope to see you again next year.
