Description

Herring House is a stunning barn conversion in Winterton-on-Sea.

The main bedroom has a 5' double bed and an ensuite bathroom whilst the second bedroom has a bunk bed (big enough for adults) and it's own bathroom with shower over bath. The kitchen and dining room look out over the courtyard garden. The highlight is a large upstairs living room with floor-to-ceiling windows which occupies the entire first floor.

Outside is a small private garden and a larger garden shared with the other cottages.

The Cottage is only a 10 minute walk from the lovely sandy beach and dunes (with excellent cafe) whilst the village's pub and fish and chip shop are locally renowned.

Tucked away in one of Norfolk's prettiest coastal villages, and within 700 yards of a glorious sandy beach, this Barn Conversion offers a welcoming holiday break, whatever the season. The perfect spot in which to relax and unwind with the dunes' Nature Reserve 6 mile circular walk almost on the doorstep, it sits just 350 yards from the local pub renowned for its good food.

The General stores, Post Office, fish and chip shop are all under 200 yards away. Fishing, day boat hire and sailing on the beautiful Broads (6miles), quaint market towns, craft centres and medieval Norwich (21 miles), with its cathedral, castle, museums, fine shopping.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our Holiday Cottages and how we look after our guests (please read our reviews). The price you pay for your holiday is always the total amount – we never charge extra for pets, fuel or firewood.
We have also managed to negotiate a number of exclusive discounts for our guests with local businesses , including the Fishermans Return pub in Winterton-on-Sea.

Great location with lots of walks for the dogs. Herring House is well equipped and comfortable. Jan is extremely helpful.

“Superb seaside holiday”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2017

Herring House, Winterton on Sea was an ideal holiday location for us, 2 boys aged 12 & 14 and grandparents, as it was about half a mile from the beach so we could walk there with our beach equipment. As we were lucky with the weather we had at least 2 days on the beach. There was also a lovely walk through the lane by the allotments and past an old ruined church, and over to the dunes, and back to the beach at Winterton (about 5 miles) Having done an online food order from Sainsbury's at Great Yarmouth, there were enough shops in Winterton for us to top up with anything else we needed. The chip shop is also very good. The cotttage was very comfortable, especially the luxurious upstairs sitting room. The kitchen was well equipped - a bread knife was the only thing we lacked so we have left one for subsequent guests. A slight problem was the lack of windows in the bedrooms as they got very hot despite keeping the curtains closed all day, and obviously we couldn't leave the doors open at night. We also thought the ensuite would have benefited from a shower cubicle rather than a bath, as the shower over the bath was impractical as there was nothing to stop water splashing everywhere. We ended up only using the shower with the screen. The cottage has comfortable beds and excellent quality bed linen and towels, and ample storage for clothes. Outside the patio got plenty of sun in the morning and evening so was good for sitting out - we would have liked to have been surrounded by a few more plants, maybe a few climbers to break up the stark fencing. Other activities to do in the area which we enjoyed were hiring a boat for 4 hours from the small boat company near the bridge at Potter Heigham and we also hired bikes for a day from Waxham Barn near Sea Palling - this is another lovely beach. Would recommend Winterton and the barns to anyone wanting a holiday away from the usual seaside amusements etc. and if you want those they are just a mile and a half down the road.

“Perfect Village Retreat”

We had a wonderful time staying at marram and herring lodge! We were a big group of friends and family who enjoyed the quick walk to the beach and lovely quiet evenings together. Couldn't compliment the house and area enough! Also a big thank you to Richard and Jan who were very welcoming and a pleasure to rent from. We will definitely love to return there again one day!

“Another fabulous holiday at Herring House”

Reviewed 10 Nov 2016

Herring House and Winterton never fail to disappoint - weather always seems to be good and accommodation is consistently good. Walks to beach are lovely and seals never fail to appear most days in the sea during our stay - such a delight! Being regular visitors year on year you almost feel you are coming home as things are pretty much as good as the year before. Access to other places is good although we choose to have a car free week and spend the week very locally. Café, shop and pub are great - food excellent and staff friendly and helpful. Friends visit during our stay and they always leave after a good meal and lovely walk. We may not be back next year due to moving house but we will miss it and perhaps will be back again in the near future

“Great place to stay”

Herring House was everything I had hoped it would be. Beautifully situated and in easy walking distance of the beach. It was modern, spacious and tastefully furnished: everything was provided that you could need for self-catering. Jan, the housekeeper, met me punctually on arrival and showed me round. She was friendly and a font of knowledge about Winterton ! Ideal weather also made it the perfect break. I would certainly return to spend another holiday at this property.

“Good all round holiday to suit everyone!”

Herring House is a great place to stay - for a couple such as we are with 2 dogs it is superb! We have been for several years now and it never disappoints. Walks to beach. shop, cafe and pub are perfect for us. Locals are friendly and dogs are very welcome. Our friends love to come to visit too! It is noticeable that the beach is more popular but who can blame them especially as the seals never fail to visit whilst we walk the length of the beach - amazing!

“Didn't live up to expectations unfortunately”

Reviewed 29 Jul 2016

We stayed at Herring House for a week in July 2016. We booked the accommodation a couple of months before, after seeing it advertised on the web. We were impressed with the web pictures, hence why we went ahead and booked. When we arrived we were disappointed that the accomodation didn't live up to our expectations based on the web pictures. There were some niggles with the place that we didn't expect to find. The converted barn had upside down accomodation with a large lounge occupying all of the top floor. In the description it states that the floor to ceiling windows are the highlight in the room. However these windows are covered in full length net curtains as the view from them is on to the back of a large house only a few yards away. The room is very light and airy as there are two large velux windows on one side with a sloping roof. They are the only form of ventilation in the room but at a height of around seven to eight feet to the base of them they were difficult to open and we had to use a chair to do this properly. On one of the windows there was a Fire Exit sticker. To be honest we weren't sure if it was meant as a joke. If not it would be very difficult to get up to that level never mind get out of it and, if you managed to do that, the window opens out onto quite a steep sloping roof! Another issue we had was with the two downstairs bedrooms. There are no windows in the rooms but they each have full glass doors. There are no wardrobes in either bedroom only a set of drawers each even though there is a picture on the website that shows a wardrobe in the main bedroom. If you need to hang anything up there were a few coat hangers to do this but it meant that your clothes were on show all of the time. In the double bedroom there is an en suite bathroom but as the lighting is very poor it felt quite dingy in there which was a shame as it was quite a nice room with exposed stone walls. There was another bathroom with a shower over the bath and although the lighting was a little better it really wasn't sufficient. Neither bathrooms have a window but each have an extractor fan. Despite that they did smell a bit musty. In the kitchen although there is sufficient worktop area there lacks spare cupboard space. We took some food with us so that we didn't have to think about shopping as soon as we got there. But there wasn't any cupboard space to put the food into so we decided to empty the crockery cupboard so that we could store the food away. This meant that we had to leave the crockery out all week but we felt was the better option. The kitchen is a good size and is otherwise well equipped but it is a pity that one or two more cupboards hadn't been installed. There were other floor based cupboards that we could have emptied but some of them smelt a little damp. Herring House is one of a handful of converted barns altogether and access to them all is via a gravelled drive that wraps around this and an adjoining barn to a shared parking area. We found this to be quite noisy as any car or person coming in or out had to pass by our property. Something we noticed was that the pictures advertised when viewing the property were a mixture of all of the barns. You don't actually see pictures of the actual barn until you have booked it. The website gives the impression of the properties being somewhat secluded however they are positioned by a side road faced by a row of houses. The website did not suggest the close proximaty of the nearby properties. Having said all of the above the barns are in a great location within a beautiful village location. There are plenty of walks available and the beach is only a short distance away. There are many places to visit closeby which is great.

“Fabulous Barn, fabulous location - would recommend to anyone”

Herring house is fabulous, so clean and peaceful in a beautiful location. Everything needed was supplied. Richard was very helpful, would recommend to anyone.

“Simply Superb”

Reviewed 5 Aug 2013

We (my husband, myself, our two children aged 2 and 5 and our dog) had a great stay at Herring House with extended family staying in Marram House, next door. The property is nicely decorated and very spacious, with a large living room, a good size kitchen/dining room and separate en-suite to the master bedroom as well as family bathroom and a bunkbed room. The owners have provided everything you could want and the house is spotless. The garden is also larger than it looks on the pictures. The area is absolutely lovely with a great beach cafe offering fab homemade cakes and a local pub that serves great food. Winterton beach is absolutely lovely with excellent sand dunes to walk through, both of which are dog friendly. What more could you want?
