Location description from owner

The East Anglia region

Norfolk is a great destination at any time of year. Miles of unspoilt coastline, internationally important nature reserves and amazing wildlife, hundreds of picturesque villages, historic market towns, fantastic seaside resorts, The Broads - Britain's magical waterland, and Norwich, a fantastic heritage, entertainment and shopping city, are just some of the delights on offer.

Winterton-on-Sea

Winterton-on-Sea is a small seaside village on a beautiful sandy and unspoiled Norfolk beach.

There is a village store stocking almost everything you will need, a Post Office which is also a newsagents and a grocery shop, a Fish & Chip shop and a 300 year old Public House which is Egon Ronay recommended. By the beach is the award-winning Dunes Café which serves teas & coffees, snacks & meals, beach requisites and, of course, a full range of Ice Cream.

Winterton-on-Sea is a beautiful, sandy Norfolk beach, with a wonderfully lonely feel. Backed by sand dunes and a nature reserve, it's a seemingly endless stretch: the type of beach where you can walk for miles and barely see another soul. Pools of water often form on the beach, creating safe places for children to play.

Our dunes nature reserve is within the "Area of outstanding Natural Beauty" (SSSI and SAC) and is ideal for bird watchers and walkers. And do not miss our colony of 30/40 seals that "live" just north of Winterton-on-Sea.

“I love this place”

Reviewed 21 Mar 2017

the weather was not as kind to us this time but that does not stop us enjoying the peace and tranquility. The house as always has everything we need and the woodburner in the lounge gives a wonderful sense of well being at the end of a cold windswept day visiting the many coastal villages in the area thank you

“Relaxing experience”

Excellent quality accommodation. Beautiful beach. Great walks in the dunes and lovely village. A truely relaxing, get away vacation!

“Wonderful”

Reviewed 6 May 2014

The cottage was excellent in every respect and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The property is very well appointed and has been refurbished to an exceptionally high standard, our 3yr old loved the toys and running around in the garden. The beach, a short walk away, was amazing and has a fairly good cafe as well. We spent a day at Bewilderwood Adventure Park which was a real hit, and then some time visiting the seal colony further up the coast.

“Just right for our needs”

Reviewed 25 Sep 2013

Although this is a small house and there were 5 of us plus a baby, it never felt cramped. The house has been refurbished to a high spec. There is a nice sloping garden and you can get to the beach in about 8 minutes. The kitchen has been thoughtfully planned and equipped for people who love to cook - eg knives that are sharp (unusual). The beds are comfortable with good quality pillows and duvets (even more unusual). We were warm and cosy throughout our stay. It wouldn't be suitable for anyone with a mobility problem (steep stairs, no handrail on steps from garden). Joining instructions very clear and extremely friendly service from Richard. We will definitely go again.

“excellent cottage in perfect coastal village”

Reviewed 4 Mar 2013

the cottage is pristine with excellent facilities, The owners are very helpful both on arrival and during the weeks before our arrival. The gardens are perfect for the dog and children with lots of space and secure fencing. The beach really is a few minutes walk and is doggy heaven, the cafe on the beach is one of the best we have visited and excellent value. The village and around the cottage is very quiet and tranquil and perfect for a peaceful break. We have stayed in many cottages in the surounding area and this is certainly one of the best both in position and quality. We will be returning later in the year!!!

“Can a cottage be thoughtful?”

Reviewed 26 Feb 2013

Photos do not do this place justice... a few minutes stroll to the beach, extremely comfortable cottage with quality (but sensible) fittings and furnishings (so refreshing when travelling with both dog and teenagers; some of us do still value the finer things in life). What really stands out though is the incredible amount of thought that has gone in to the property... everything you might want is there (but not the rubbish that you don't want), from bike stands, to firewood and steps for little ones who can't reach the toilet. Never mind the clever design features (the firewood gate than turns in to a gate to create a toddler safe outdoor space)? And I haven't even mentioned how very, very clean it was ...

“Great location, beautifully appointed, home from home”

Reviewed 20 Feb 2013

Coastguard Cottage is beautifully presented. The furniture & fittings are of a very high standard. Everything you need is there. There is ample kitchen equipment to bake a cake, do a sunday roast etc. if you are inclined. There is a large enclosed garden - good for keeping a dog / small children safe. The owner is very helpful answering my email queries promptly and meeting us on arrival to show us around We would definitely visit again, but in the late spring / summertime when more of the Norfolk attractions are open. The cottage is in the small village of Winterton on Sea. It is about 10 mins walk to the beach through the sand dunes. The beach is beautiful, mainly sandy. and stretches as far as the eye can sea. At this time of year seals swim just off shore and will follow you as you walk along the beach. You can walk for miles. The Village has a post office/newsagents which sells basic produce, a Mace store, a fish and chip shop, beach cafe and an excellent Pub, the Fishermen's Return . The pub serves lovely home cooked food, with a specials menu that changes daily but beware the portions are enormous. The beach cafe opens weekends in the winter and serves excellent cakes/bun and simple dishes.

“Perfect Norfolk coast cottage”

Reviewed 10 Feb 2013

Coastguard Cottage is one of those rare cliches - a home from home. No expense has been spared in the renovation of this gorgeous place which, from the outside, looks small and cosy but on the inside opens up into a spacious and inviting place. Three bedrooms will comfortably house 6 people with an olympic size bathroom upstairs, while the open plan downstairs offers lounge, dining and kitchen along with usable cupboards for those muddy boots, and even a utility with a loo. Winterton-on-Sea has a lovely pub, with generously large plates of good food and Woodford's beers, a post office and a fish&chip shop, but it's the fact that 200 yards from the cottage are the sand dunes and beach that makes this place even better. You can walk miles along the beach, through the dunes, and to loads of other lovely little villages before returning to the warmth of the wood-burner in the cottage. Practical advantages include the parking for two cars, the proximity to big seaside town Great Yarmouth and the large garden, but to be honest it's the cottage that would have me returning. A genuine pearl, I'm almost loathed to tell anyone else in case we can't book it again! Thanks, Richard - we will be back.

“Fantastic Cottage in a delightful friendly village”

Reviewed 22 Oct 2012

We really wanted to book a lovely cottage to stay with our 5 month year old son. As we were staying in every evening the cottage had to be perfect and it was. They had everything that we needed form a travel cot to toys. It was also a treat to have a dishwasher for a week! Winterton on Sea is a lovely, little friendly village with a fantastic pub that cooks delicious food. The beach was a 5 minute walk away with a delightful cafe and a long sandy beach. I can imagine that this would be so nice in the summer. We had some brilliant walks along the beach. If we had to give a negative - we didn't like the fish and chips and if the owners could get a bigger television, that would be great!! ;-) x All in all a lovely first little holiday with our son.

“If its peace and quiet you want then come here”

Reviewed 23 Sep 2012

We stayed here for 4 nights as a short break. We wanted some quiet time near a beach and the cottage was great for this. The village was quiet in September out of season but I image it could get very busy in the summer. Local amenities are good. The village has everything you need but be prepared to drive for anything more than the village store. The local pub, fish and chip shop and Dunes café are great and all the locals friendly, including the seals. Activities are easy to find and do with the Broads within a couple of miles. The house is tastefully decorated and in great condition. We were pleasantly surprised at the lack of seagulls and therefore noise first thing in the morning! A great place for stargazing on a clear night.
