Description

In the heart of a small coastal village, this pretty 'chocolate box' thatched cottage has been tastefully renovated to offer a welcoming holiday break whatever the season It has four double bedrooms with plenty of space for all the family.
Set in a quiet crescent just 50 yards from a pub renowned for its food, it lies a short stroll from the sandy beach and dunes nature reserve, whose 6 mile circular walk affords sightings of the local seal colony. Fishing, day boat hire and sailing are found on the Broads (6 miles) and Norwich with its cathedral, castle and fine shopping is a short drive.

The East Anglia region

Winterton-on-Sea is an ancient fishing village some 8 miles north of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. A small village with around 650 houses and 1,500 inhabitants.

Do not expect amusement arcades or hot dog establishments in the village.

DO expect a beautiful sandy and largely unspoiled Norfolk beach, dunes so peaceful that the Tern colony has moved here in recent years.

The beach has a rare colony of Natterjack Toads and you may well see an Adder or two.

There is a well stocked village store, a Post Office which is also a Newsagents and a grocery shop, a Fish & Chip shop serving a full range of products which are always freshly cooked to order and a 300 year old Public House which is Egon Ronay recommended. There is also the Beach Café which serves teas & coffees, snacks & meals and of course a full range of Ice Cream.

The dunes nature reserve is within the "Area of outstanding Natural Beauty" (SSSI and SAC) and is ideal for bird watchers and walkers. And do not miss the colony of seals.

Also near to the village, at Blood Hill, Somerton, is one of the first wind farms in the UK. The ten turbines were sited in 1992 and they generate 2.25 megga-watts which is enough to supply some 1000 homes.

“A fantastic, well-equipped, family and dog-friendly cottage in a perfect location”

Reviewed 2 Nov 2014

We went to Periwinkle with our friends - overall we comprised a group of 2 families, with 4 young children, and 2 dogs, I have to say that this cottage was perfect for our holiday. It has everything that you need - well equipped kitchen (washing machine came in very handy), dishwasher, big oven etc. The rooms were spacious enough, and the dining table managed to fit us all round. The garden was totally enclosed and therefore perfect for the dogs. The stair gate came in very handy, not just for the stairs, but also if we wanted to keep the dogs in the kitchen while we ate. The three toilets / two bathrooms were also ideal for a group of so many people. Overall, a clean, spacious and well - equipped cottage that was plenty big enough for 8 people and 2 dogs. And with helpful neighbours! We will definitely be coming back. Just a couple of things to note - if you have a child still in a cot, take a travel cot with you as there isn't one in the cottage- however there is a highchair and a stairgate. Also watch them with the windows in the bedroom - they are easily widely opened by investigative toddlers! We have been to Winterton once before, so knew what to expect from the village. It is a small, unspoilt village, with a couple of shops, a pub and very friendly and helpful residents. We love it there. The air is clean, it is a short walk to the beach, and the beach café does the most amazing cakes and sandwiches. The dogs and kids love the beach alike - a long stretch of sandy beach perfect for the dogs to run about on, great dunes for the kids to climb. And often a few seals pop out of the sea to say hello. I even managed a couple of runs on the beach - and breathing the fresh sea air as you run along next to the sea was amazing. It's a short walk/run to Hemsby if you want something a bit busier or some funfair rides for the kids, a short drive to Yarmouth for even more still. And then back to the tranquillity of Winterton. What more could you ask for? We would happily spend several more weeks here.

“Beautiful cottage, perfect location - a match made in heaven!!”

Periwinkle has everything needed in a home. We are a large family of 8 adults and one 20 month old granddaughter and the cottage suited us admirably. 2 bathrooms, 3 toilets, 4 excellent bedrooms and pretty enclosed garden. All very clean and beautiful decorated. There is a pub opposite that serves good food and the fish shop , post office/newsagent and grocers shop are just around the corner. The sand dunes and beach are a 10 minute stroll away - there is a beach cafe that serves up tasty food. Winterton on sea is a pretty little village with a lovely church, we were lucky to have lovely weather and enjoyed exploring. We took the bus into Great Yarmouth one day - very good price for tickets - and our dog was allowed on too, no problem.

“Lovely cottage and location”

Visited with friends. The cottage is`lovely and had plenty of room for the eight of us, Having three toilets was good, the kitchen had everything you could want. Winterton is a great spot the people are so friendly and beach is a few miniutes stroll away the Dunes Cafe is worth a visit. The pub accross the road was excellent very friendly with good food. Went to the greyhound racing on Saturday which was a blast, had a table in the restaurant overlooking the finishing line. Jean next door was sooo helpful all in all a perfect place for a relaxing holiday. Will be back. HL

Lovely cottage in a perfect location. Pub over the road is excellent and the village fish shop is one of the best. Great for dogs, our Lab loved it.
